Ok, I've begun work on the test model for the Deathwing Cataphracti just to make sure I have the schema that I want to use for the assembly line down properly. This isn't going to be a proper squad, but veterans interspersed through my other squads to show that there are a few of these venerable suits in operation with the Unforgiven chapters.

I've mostly finished the armor itself, though I'm debating a very thin Ushabti Bone wash to help blend the highlights together. The gold is at the first stage. I'll get a heavy highlight, a Nuln Oil wash, then rehighlighting. Weapons will be Khorne Red highlighted up.

This is the plasma gunner and will "count as" a Plasma Cannoneer with Chainfist.

I have enogh that I will be making two Lightning Claw terminators (more for looks than how good they perform) and then I will be constructing stormshields out of plasticard to make two TH/SS terminators and finally one will have a combi-bolter(count as storm bolter) and power sword and act as a veteran Sergeant.

What are your thoughts on the concept and the scheme?

Jobs a goodun as they say. Wee bit clean for me as I prefer a more weathered look, base, drybrush, wash, drybrush highlights lol.

For the Lion and Terra!

Because nothing in the galaxy is black and white, Mankind views the Space Marines as a last resort. The last line. When all else fails. They take up the burden. The noble defenders of Mankind. The last hope.

With finecast you can bypass the washing stage and throw them straight into the bin.

Or cut out the middleman and just flush some money down the toilet.

Thanks.

Haven't gotten to the weathering stage, yet, but I'm still debating the level of grime to put on it.

I'm working on my own Deathwing Cataphractii, I'm not sure how the Bone scheme is working out for it really! I was considering the same colour scheme as bone and gold looks really nice in theory, but somehow in practice.

From what I see, you need to thin your paints a little or blend them a little. Apply a Nuln Oil wash to the gold, its currently too thick. Weathering helps too, as they would be relatively ancient by the time Deathwing changes their colour to white, Cataphractii armour needs a really ancient look to make it look good.

What colour are you planning to paint the leather hangy bits?

The paints are as thin as they can reliably get. I mix with water and paint on a wet palette.

What I am going to do is run a thin wash of screaming skull over the armor plates, see if that blends the colors together a bit better.

The gold is at a very early stage. It's getting a Nuln wash followed by a highlight of a lighter gold with some silver on the tips for reflections.

For the leather straps I'm thinking Rhinox Hide, washed with Agrax brown, Highlighted with Gorthor Brown, then washed again with Black/Brown mix. I used the same for my biker seats and it's a dirty, old leather which is what these would be.

Brown Strips don't really pop, though. I was thinking of going for Dark Red on mine

Hmm. That does give me something to think about. In consideration, I think you're right about it being a little bland with the model already being mostly beige. What about Caliban Green highlighted up? Akin to how the chest eagles on modern terminators are usually green, or the tabards on the new DW Knights are green. It'd be a similar color pairing.

Could do. I hate having Green/Red/White on my Deathwing though, it makes them look like Christmas decorations.

Keep this post updated, I'd really like to see how they turn out.

Ok, here's the progress I've gotten so far:

1) I washed and highlighted the gold
2) I painted the leather Caliban green and then highlighted up and washed it with green (tried Waywatcher Green glaze -- not impressed -- but it did do its job on the kneepads, where I put it to give it a 'so dark green it's black' feel to the knees.)
3) Did the plasma coils, and rest of the plasma "cannon".
4) Highlighted red up two levels and then washed it with a thinned version of the base red.
5) Washed the bone armor plates with a thinned screaming skull from GW.
6) Did cleanup on mistakes on the model.
7) You can't see it but I painted the power generator and the back leg armor plates in Leadbelcher and then washed with black and then re-highlighted in Leadbelcher. I wanted a heavy, armored feeling to the model. Bottom of the feet are done the same way.

Aside from the base, I'm ready to assemble him.

Just an observation, and not a criticism of your painting which is great.

Deathwing colours didn't exist until well after the Heresy, until the Deathwing incident as per William Kings book. Before this and upto the Heresy and before, the Dark Angels used their Regular Colour scheme for their Terminators.

I'm cool with it because it will look good, Just be aware that some douchebags will hate on you and criticise you about this. Much like people criticising my Pre-Heresy Iron Hands for not being completely Black , it's as if no one likes the idea of creativity or imagination.

Collecting Forge World 30k????? If you prefix any Thread Subject line on 30k or Pre-heresy or Horus Heresy with [30K] we can convince LEGO and the Admin team to create a 30K mini board if we can show there is enough interest!

Thanks, and I'm aware of that. The storyline for these guys are that they are truly ancient pieces of tech in the chapter armory. That they're still around and many thousands of years old. Basically, this is very post heresy and these are relics left over from the Crusade that occasionally are given to the most trusted of veterans for use.
