Is Texas making a fair point about the subject or is it a pipe dream? http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/we-want-to-be-alone-the-texas-independence-movement-wants-americas-second-largest-state-to-leave-the-union-8492246.html

Live your life that the fear of death can never enter your heart. Trouble no one about his religion. Respect others in their views and demand that they respect yours. Love your life, perfect your life. Beautify all things in your life. Seek to make your life long and of service to your people. When your time comes to die, be not like those whose hearts are filled with fear of death, so that when their time comes they weep and pray for a little more time to live their lives over again in a different way. Sing your death song, and die like a hero going home.

125,000 petition signatures sounds like a lot, but it's pressing a button on a computer - how many millions of people forwarded that Kony 2012 thing, but it was a novelty, and underneath there was a complete absence of people willing to do the hard work needed to do something meaningful. When it came to doing something that is kind of inconvenient and almost means something, these people got a whopping 200 people to turn up for a rally.

There is no real movement here, just a bunch of fringe nutters.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

Adam Smith, who must have been some kind of leftie or something.

Pipe dream. If anything, the dream in every Texan's heart is re-unification with England!

On a more serious note, I think Texas has bigger problems on its hands (not Frazz) but rather, the escalation of the Mexican drug wars. The reports I've been reading in the news, paints a grim picture, and Texas could be one giant military base for the national guard at this rate.

Like all such movements, it's going to quickly splinter into the serious minded, rational faction and the paranoids. Reading that article, I didn't exactly see a lot of rationale being put forward for secession. What I did see was tired yet predictable venom towards Obama.

These guys remind me somewhat of Keven Smith, who completely coincidentally realized he hated critics after his first bad reviews. Where were they 10 years ago when a native son ruled the land?

No. This is old news.
1. Only a few nutjobs really want it. Now if we could get out without the national debt it would be a good deal. We do like our independence though from you damnyankees (thats a technical term).
2. The nations of the world would not permit it. After we permitted Canada, Central America, and South America to join the new nation of Greater Texas, Scotland and Ireland would join, and we would have no choice but to restart the Napoleonic campaigns. Its what we do.

Didn't the Lowlanders wear pants? I imagine the Highlanders avoided sitting in snow whenever possible...

As a (lowlander) Scot, that's one of the things that really kind of annoyed me...

The reality of a lot of the stuff (as I understand it), is really quite interesting.

Sure, the big giant kilts - the things that go over your shoulder - have always been a highland thing.

However, the modern day kilt people wear nowadays was, if not THE first, but one of the early, if not the most popular attempts at creating clothing branding... A bit like your football strips with your families on them. It was pretty much a wholly commercial thing.

On top of that, there's another thing that really bugs me about trying to manufacture this whole Scottish identity thing.
A few years back, the local councils went through this phase of adding alternative Gaelic spellings under all train station signs and things.

In the lowlands... we don't, nor have we ever, spoken Gaelic! We spoke, and still speak, Scots. And the Scots spelling for most place names... is pretty much the same as the English spelling.

Sorry for the rant, it's a pet peeve of mine.

The best examples of the Scots language would be the poems and songs of Robert Burns.

You likely know some Scots yourself and sang one of his songs oh... a month and a half ago.

No I'm saying its basically English with a Scottish accent? Maybe some different spellings of words and such?

There's never been real agreement on the difference between a dialect and a language. But wikipedia gives a suggestion of 'it's a bit like the difference between Norwegian and Danish.'

My own acid test was giving some of my English friends a sample comic strip of 'Oor Wullie' and 'The Broons' and judging how confused they were.

They were very confused. As were some of the Welsh fowk.
