Outer Space, Apparently

If you can't stand losing models then take 2 veteran squads and fill up your HS with leman russes.

There are no weaknesses with IG - just the painting. amazing how they put more detail into a sodding guardsman than a space marine.

You're going to use a metric that ignores changes in the price of food, energy, rent/mortgages, and car payments. You know, what 90% of people spend almost all their money on.
Umm...what? The CPI very definitely includes food, energy, housing, etc.

Either way, find me, from any source, a measure of inflation that you deem takes all of these into account that resembles in any way the 11.5% rate that the basic IG infantry followed, hell, even *half* that rate from any official source. Food prices aren't increasing at that rate. Energy isn't. Housing certainly hasn't. Nor have car payments/prices.

You won't find it

At least, not outside Zimbabwe.

Yes, compared to the price of yachts, diamonds, and inter-bank loan rates, GW's prices have been going up rapidly. Compared to everything else, they haven't.
Um...I'll ask again, are you arguing that every day prices of common items has been increasing at 11.5% yearly? Because there's zero economic basis for arguing that. Nowhere GW sells has the price of food, housing, car payments, energy, etc gone up by anywhere near 11.5%, even just half that would be controversial. I'm sure not paying $85 for groceries I paid $50 for 5 years ago, I'm paying maybe $55. Nor am I paying utility bills of $190 that were $110 5 years ago, instead it's ~$125.

No matter what source you use, US or UK Gov't official rates, CPI, etc, inflation isn't anywhere near that rate. Smirnoff doesn't count as a valid source for inflationary measure, especially when it's not actually as expensive as you claim it to be.

And guard STILL isn't much more expensive than other armies. And 40k is STILL a phenominal value compared to smoking, drinking, watching movies, putting gas in your car, eating out, and dozens of other habits you could be spending your money on instead.
An irrelevant strawman, they're still much more expensive than they were than just a couple years ago and by far one of the most expensive armies in this hobby.

IRON WITHIN, IRON WITHOUT.

New Heavy Gear Log! Also...Grey Knights!
The correct pronunciation is Imperial Guard and Stormtroopers, "Astra Militarum" and "Tempestus Scions" are something you'll find at Hogwarts.

As an argument goes on, it inevitably reaches a point where someone calls someone else's bit a strawman.

Ladies and gentlemen, this is that point.

Halfway between nowhere and anarchy

I agree with CaptainGrey, my thread was supposed to work out if I should go for IG, not to work out what it would have cost 5 years ago or where to source cheaper vodka. As amusing as it is reading your bickering, I'm going to stop reading now due to an influx of non-warhammer content.
Keep your friends close, your enemies closer and your arguments off my thread.
Until next time dakka,

My main beef with playing guard is just the logistics involved in getting an army together and painting.

You end up painting more than everyone else, you end up with more stuff to lug around, paying more, spend more time moving, roll more dice, etc.

It's... just a lot of stuff.

I agree.

My main gripe about foot-guard isn't a certain unit, or a certain weakness. The painting is easy and enjoyable, if tedious.

My big complaint is that deployment takes ages.

Play Mech Guard... drop 20 chimera chassis tanks. Watch opponent squirm. Start having your opponent pick up his Space Marines like they are IG infantry caught out in the open. Profit.

Deployment can be painful.
Played a 2k game the other day against a drop pod deep strike list. I had 108 guardsmen.
I filled my whole side if the board maximizing unit coherency just to piss him off.
Won though.
I enjoy the mass numbers.

Agreed. If I had a dollar for every time I have had lasguns kill Terminators and MC's, then I would most likely be able to buy my army over again

On the flip side, I have also had most of my lasguns wiff and fail to kill cultists or other really light infantry

But I don't want to play Mech Guard, I want to play Foot Guard hahahaha. Deployment does take ages, but the pain you can bring with 200 Infantry models is so worth the time spent

Just by chance (seeing as this thread is already running), does anyone know any genius tactics for IG other than mob them with bodies and tanks?

Not really. Sure, you can use subtle variations and don't always just run straight at the enemy, but in the end it all comes down to "I've got more guns than you, I win". IG are not a subtle army.

There is no such thing as a hobby without politics. "Leave politics at the door" is itself a political statement, an endorsement of the status quo and an attempt to silence dissenting voices.
