I'm brand new...dont have a full army yet, let alone a painted one. Still interested in the game part of the game.
As far as I can tell there aren't regular games anywhere near Athens, GA (checked my hobby shop). It looks like Marietta is the nearest place. Surely there are plenty of W40k gamers in the area encomassing Athens, Lawrenceville, Gainesville, and smaller townships northeast of Atlanta?
I would love to play a 500pt game (all i have right now...don't worry, buying and painting furiously if ineffectively) but I would also like to observe others and see your armies up close.
Hit me up!

Granted I'm lacking in where all the stores are but I can name a number in the perimeter. There's Phoenix games in Buford, Gigabites cafe in Marietta, The Tower in Sugarloaf but those are all an hour away (according to Gmaps from athens) There once was a GW in the Mall of Ga but closed and moved to Sandy Springs which is also far away...
You might want to check up the websites or maybe call to see if anyone knows of more. I'm pretty sure there are Hobbytown USAs that sell/play 40k. I hope you can find some games/stores to check out.

Phoenix games closed a while ago.
The Tower is mostly Magic and Pokemon.
FCB in Alpharetta is off GA-400 and just as long of a drive.
The GW store in Roswell has a small community and Kenny, the manager, is a great guy, but the store only has two tables.
Giga-Bites in Marietta is your best bet to learn the game and have a great community. You will not be disappointed. I would recommend posting on their forums and arranging a game. The general point level people play at Giga-Bites is 1850-2000, but people do play smaller games. The big 40K days are Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Fantasy is played mostly on Mondays, Fridays and Saturdays. Magic is usually Tuesdays and Fridays. Thursdays is Skirmish Games. Sunday is mostly Tournaments. If you come game on the appropriate days, you generally won't have to arrange a game prior, but since you are still learning the game, I would recommend you still do so.
The store is open until 11pm weeknight, 1am on Friday and Saturday and 9pm on Sundays. The opening hours make it worth the drive even if you live a little further out from the store like you and me.

Thanks for the replies, all. Looks like the Marietta Gigabytes Cafe is the best bet, but I will investigate a Hobbytown USA in Duluth as well.. My problem is that Atlanta traffic is the third worst in the country and I got into this hobby to relax and have a good time, not a stroke . I'm going to try and get the 9 or so guys on meetup.com's waiting list to activate as well and see if we can't rent a room or something from time to time. I'd like to have at least some experience before I try to organize something...I haven't even go tmy 6th edition rules in the mail yet.

hahah holy crap. what a coincidence... I just posted a thread looking for the same thing.
I am not a beginner at all, but I am happy to get a game in. I'm in Law school at UGA, but will always make time to nerd a bit.
PM me if you want to get a game in.

Hobbytown USA in Duluth is selling off all their Warhammer stock for buy 2 get 1 free. I won't make it down just b/c the gas and time makes it less of a good buy, but you other Atlantans should go pillage. And they don't host games. :(
Hey Mohoc, when are games likely to be held on Warhammer days at Giga, particularly during the day?

Your best bet for day time games is Saturday (any time of day) and Sunday. Most week days, I would recommend arranging a game on the forums if you want to start before 4pm. You will still probably find a game otherwise, but you might have to wait a bit.

I'm also a noob looking to get further into the hobby. I have maybe 500 pts assembled and painted myself, but I've never played the game. being new to the game is intimidating but I do want to learn the ropes (I need to justify buying and painting these models to myself) and seeing others out there with my level of experience is encouraging. I'm on the southeast side of Atlanta probably an hour from giga. Unfortunately I work night shifts so the only days I can spare are Sundays and maybe Saturdays.
In any case i plan on visiting the shop within the next few weekends.

I live near Conyers. How far away are you? We might be able to car pool up there on a Saturday. I'll give you a few intro games. I also have more than one army if you want to play a larger game.

I figured it was only a matter of time before that little Irish guy commented on here. Automatically Appended Next Post: @Jimbo - the prices are going to be very close if not identical. But if you're gonna buy new, always get it from a brick and mortar store. gotta support the local gaming shops whenever possible.

Sounds good, when I'm ready to plan a game. For the next 2 weekends I can't make any plans as I may already have other engagements that may or may not fall through. But if I do find the time I may come by empty handed to look around and maybe watch a game or two. And to purchase a means of transporting my models for when I do plan on a game. And get anidea of what other preparations I'll need to make.

Well, I am heading up there in an hour or two. I'll be there until close tonight (1am). If you end up being able to come, I'll give you some demo games. I will have my IG and CSM with me.

I work on Friday nights unfortunately. I may go tomorrow, pending aforementioned other possible engagements. In either case I appreciate the demo offer. I'll post on the Giga's forum when I do go. Perhaps if you aren't able to one of the other regulars would be willing.

I am pretty sure someone will be there that can give you some intro games. We have a lot of newer players at the store as well, giving you the possibility of playing at that skill level. For myself, I'll be up there tonight for Necomunda and Sunday for the Atlanta Series Tournament.

For sure check out Giga, the owners a pretty chill dude and there are several good folks that play there. Just watch out for the guy with the "whimpy" orks.
And if you want to help support a fancy new FLGS, I suggest checking out StrikeForce Games in the Smyrna area!

Just spent the afternoon at Giga, watched a battle and learned quite a bit. Definitely encouraged me to get to the table myself. I recommend stopping by and spending a long while watching others play (with their consent of course) if you're looking for experience and you can't arrange a demo, or if you have to wait for a table. The players their were happy to answer my many questions about mostly special rules and anything else I asked about.
Bought some pluckfoam so that I may return with models. Great store.
