Subject: Tau vs Grey Knights & IG 1750 BAO Practice
As I play both these armies (actually all 4 of them in same combinations too lol), I gotta admit even I forgot that the hammerhead plasma cannons were AP2.
Traditionally I've stuck with the farseer with runes of warding buffing ldr for my fire warrior squads but I may have to consider fugen on a quad gun. Never really considered having anything other than farseers and eldrad before mostly cause I want them for buffing hammerheads and messing up GK/SW/Nid (and now chaos too) psy powers but this is making me rethink it a bit.
My Gk lists have morphed quite a bit since the eariler 6th edition IG blob support roles now too and generally find some place to pop in a dread knight and I'm also using IG arty too for indirect fire because like Reese says, it's actually pretty good at sniping things.
I've been mostly experimenting with the medusa (to supplement AP2) /colossus(for digging gone to ground troops like chaos cultists, fire warriors, and light AV 10 that depend on jink saves - i.e. DE/Tau/Eldar/nids too actually and I can' t always roll 4's for my inquisitors on the psychic table) but an earth shaker can do pretty good as well as an all around unit. Tech marine, ruins, and cammo cape is a great combo (I leave it enticingly visible to use as fire magnet)

Tetras have a heavy 4 markerlight (though at BS 3, you are average of 2 hits)
Plasma hammerheads are really cheap . A railgun costs 90 points just for the gun (and submunitions I guess) but the BS4, twin linked 48' shots at just +15 points means you don't need tetras to markerlight for ballestic skill and just strip cover. Great vs MEQ.
The TL plasma guns can also risk sky firing pretty safely 30.2% to hit with TL each shot. It costs less than a psyfleman dreadnaught, has better survivability, and better AP (can get past flying daemon prince armor save as well as flying hive tyrant - well unless he paid for the armored shell which I find few nids seem to get the points to do so as they usually just get 2 tyrants and wings are already damn expensive). Also easily gets bsf so you can shoot more or less effecitvely like a psyfleman dread and you know how much everyone loves those things.
It misses out on str 8 which is kind of a big deal vs tougher targets but you got railguns for that kind of work.

What about the tetras and that plasma hammerhead from FW makes tau so crazy? I understand the Fuegan and EJB.
According to Forge World update, the FW Hammerhead's Twin-linked Plasma Cannon is 48" Str7 AP3 Heavy 4 (NOT BLAST), Twin-linked and the FW Tetra is armed with a "High Intensity Markerlight", which is 36" Heavy 4. Add in the ability to upgrade the Tetra with a Targeting Array for 5 points and you have yourself a very effective support unit. Markerlights are commonly used to increase BS of another Tau unit shooting at a marked target and/or reducing cover saves of said marked unit.
The IG + GK player didn't realize the Hammerhead 's Twin-linked-Plasma Cannon was not AP2 and wished he opted a more aggressive strategy for his GK Terminators.
Oh ok that's some pretty cool stuff thanks for filling me in. I don't ever get to play against tau at all. Great report as usual with a little humor too.
Israel seemed to win at deployment knowing his army really well except for that plasma mistake, as it would have been really interesting if Mack had just deep struck right in there, for sure like you guys are saying.

I agree that he should have played the terminators more aggressively. I would've left off anything else that didnt have terminator armor and deep struck them right in his face. Also deploying all units to one flank would have helped in limting how many units of the Tau's could actualy shoot and would force him to have to move around.

Tetras make Tau tier 1. Some people see that as a bad thing, that Tau become good with FW, but to me that is a positive! When was the last time Tau beat GK/IG so soundly?
And, the GK player said it was new to him and next time he'd play it better.
The plasma hammerhead is heavy 4, str7 ap3, twin linked.
Fun game though, and so far, only my Nids have beaten Israel's Tau. It is really solid.

it is solid, but forgeworld, what is that with Fuegan on that quadgun, need to check rulebook about his specials, but it seems like a huge point sink to do this...

Order. Unity. Obedience.
We taught the galaxy these things
And we shall do so again.

Basically for BS7, Eternal Warrior and the Exarch abilities Tank Hunters and Crack Shot.
Crack Shot allow Fuegan to reroll to wound with the Quad gun that already is TL. Besides, denied cover saves too.
I agree with you that this would be a huge point sink however.

It's really area dependent. From the looks of things, at least the BAO (one of the bigger west coast USA tourneys) will allow it. In Japan, we've been allowing forgeworld units as well as long as it's not apoc unit of some sort. what's the East coast USA and british tourneys doing?
Anything from the Europe scene?

Fuegan on a quad gun is the heat AA in the game. Ignored cover, bs7, reroll armor pen. Pretty much one shot, one kill on damn near any flier.
He is pricey, though. Against other armies you can play him aggressively as an assaulting unit.
The bao allows forgeworld and we are the biggest tournament west of the rockies. 150 40k singles players this year! Very excited for that. A lot of events will be allowing fw in the usa this year from what I've been told. I see it becoming a lot more prevalent. A lot of European countries have been using it for years.
