What is the viability of a Tyranid monstrous creature list in 6th edition? I'm talking about lists that have: two tyrants, multiple tervigons, all heavy support slots filled with various monstrous creatures, and troops of minimum units of termagants etc. Do they work and are they capable of being competitive?

Apart from the heavy support slots, that's just about the standard tournament build for Tyranids.

Two flying hive tyrants and two or three Tervigons should be in pretty much every competitive list. Trygons are still quite good, and some people have success with Dakkafexes (carnifex with devourers).

A lot of armies lack the high strength, low ap firepower needed to go through that many wounds. Iron Arm on the psykers (Tyrants and Tervigons) can easily win games. A toughness 9, flying Hive Tyrant is nearly unstoppable to a lot of armies.

+1 for what he said. Any competitive list has 2+ Tervigons and at least 1 flyrant. I also find the swarmlord quite good, great force multiplier and if he does see combat, he'll tear things up.

Taking 3 psychic powers on every Tervigon means that your going to likely be getting something good with each one.
