Subject: Tohaa- is it possible to make a decent list with the models released so far?

I know it is very few, so that's why I'm asking. I'll probably jump back into Infinity with them at some point soon! I had picked up Combined after getting some great advice on here, only to discover that half the players at my local store run Combined! So Tohaa it will be for me when the time comes although I'm willing to wait a bit for more releases to come out for them.
So, is it possible to make a decent list with the models released so far? Counting this model too, I guess, since I think it's about to be released (posted on BoW today):

It's always possible to make a decent list in Infinity! To answer your question, yes.

You can make a(n IMO) great 150 list from the starter itself: http://infinitycreator.com/users/124/army_lists/28215 Speaking of you playing Tohaa, I have the starter box ( NIB but no shrink) and don't want it - Salvage

Yes it is very easy... and they hurt very badly. The Tohaa Triad formation are such an effing PITA. Btw its the offical stance of CB that if a model doesn't exist in the line it is tournament legal to use any other model from Infinity.

Salvage, a local person told me the exact same thing but I think I need to order it from Miniature Market because I want the other models and it's the only way I'll get free shipping (and I have like $10 in "store credit" there that I need to use).
Kanluwen is going to help me come up with a list, I think; I'm shooting for 300 points and would like to use one of every model released up to this point (i.e. not duplicate sculpts) with the exception of the Kamael troops from the starter pack, which I don't think I'll use for now.
Gao-Rael (sniper rifle model)
Gao-Rael (spitfire model)
Hatail Spec-Ops (one model, but has an alternate head so I can repeat it if really necessary...)
Makaul Trooops (4 models)
Clipsos Infiltrator (combi-rifle model)
Ectros Regiment (viral combi-rifle model)
Sakiel Regiment (viral combi-rifle model)
Obviously if that's well over 300 points I'll just leave some of the models out of a list. My group is also pretty relaxed about weaponry, so I can run them as different weapons if needed. I'll definitely pick up the Gao-Tarsos once it's released, too but I'm hoping to make my order well before that (basically as soon as the second Gao-Rael model is listed as in-stock online).

The Gao Tarsos release is making me seriously reconsider my CA Exrah based list. I've only bought 2 models for it, so I'm not invested. And it would be so easy to just buy the Tohaa starter and the few extras released so far. The only real misses in the range so far have been the Kamael, which might be more due to the paint scheme for them just not working for me.

You could go for something like this:
Tohaa | 10 models
________________________________________________________
 Ectros Lt (50|0)
 Gao-Tarsos HMG (40|1.5)
 Gao-Rael Spitfire (38|1.5)
 Gao-Rael Sniper (37|1)
 Sakiel Viral (26|0)
 Clipsos Minelayer (25|0.5)
 Makaul BS (21|0)
 Makaul BS (21|0)
 Makaul BS (21|0)
 Makaul BS (21|0)

So you'll have 2 Fire teams on the board, with a minelaying Clipsos up front to try and deny some area of the board thanks to hidden deployment and mines. this could make either a safe landing zone for the Tarsos or herd the enemy into a more vulnerable position. Once the Tarsos lands you may be able to fire team him with the Clipsos if one other unit rushes up - say the impetuous Sakiel?
Makauls just got Boarding shotguns cos a)that template at DMG 14 is hella' fun! and b)take up pts to ensure you don't go over 10 models and require a Kameel (which you mentioned you didn't want to use.)

Two things here:
- Not every unit is allowed to form fireteams. In the case of the Tohaa army only those units with the Tohaa link ability stated in the profile. Clipsos and Gao Tarsos don't have Tohaa link.
-Equipping the Makauls with Boarding Shotguns is wasting what makes them really good: cheap heavy flamethrower wielding warbands. While I can see you needed to fill points in the list, I would look for a second "support oriented" low number member combat group. If points allow it (I didn't any calculations), I think a few Chaksas would be a good choice.

KoganStyle's list is essentially what I would have given you as well RiTides--just with the Gao-Tarsos on there
Likely the reason he did not include the Hatail Spec Ops is that Spec Ops are not really a profile you can take in regular play. They are for the Campaign: Paradiso and use a Kamael's basic profile.

Got it . Given Janzerker's comment, though, any good way to use the last points without upgrading the Makaul's guns? Upgrade somebody else's gun, maybe or change the Sakiel for another Gao-Tarsos?
This has been very helpful, thanks . The only problem being I now need the Gao-Tarsos to get released

well a possible switcheroo is to give the Sakiel a Light Rocket Launcher (so you'd have to proxy, no issues there) and then you could give the Makaul their flame throwers back.
As Kan said, the Hatail is just a Kameel in regular play, although you could proxy him as anything you liked (another Sakiel or Clipsos or something!)
Cheers Janzerker for the fireteams catch! missed it totally!

Sweet, thanks! I might even give 2 of the Makauls the boarding shotguns anyway, just to mix it up.
Now to wait patiently for the Gao-Tarsos

I can't speak to that list, but on the Gorgos, it's got a few problems that some people find detracts from the unit to the point of unuseability. First, it's a TAG with Wounds, not Structure. Which means it's the only TAG in the game that can't be repaired, only revived when it's lost its Symbiont profile and the last wound on its regular profile and is Unconscious. Second, due to having Symbiont armour, it's vulnerable to Fire based attacks. If a Symbiont armoured unit fails an armour save against a Fire based weapon, it immediately loses all wounds from both profiles and moves to the Dead state, bypassing Unconscious, meaning it can't be revived,. Third, it's got (or had) fairly lacklustre weapons. In N2, the HMG was king and the 'good' TAGs had at least standard HMGs, if not Multi HMGs. The Gorgos has a Spitfire. Now, however, Spitfires have taken a nerf at short range, while the Gorgos has its Spitfire which is decent at short range and good at medium range. It also has the Flammenspeer which lacked punch and has limited ammo, sort of a nerfed Heavy Rocket Launcher. Fourth, the Chaksa Perfical is seen to have an odd weapon loadout, with a Light Shotgun and Flash Grenades. Some like the Gorgos, some don't. Some don't feel the Fire vulnerability is too bad, I certainly don't. It's weapon loadout got improved in N2, with the Flammenspeer gaining (Disposable) so it can be reloaded, and the weapons complement each other. Spitfire for Short or Medium range, Flammenspeer for Long range. The Flammenspeer also gained some punch with its Direct Hit firing mode that loses the template and bumps up the damage. The Perfical is a fun addition and also lets you cover an approach if you're fearful of a Fire toting unit. However, it still has the distinction of being the only non-Repairable TAG, which is a real blow. There were hopes that it would get something like Symbiont Level 2 giving it Fire immunity or the ability to be repaired, but that never happened. I feel the reason you won't see it pop up on list recommendations these days is more that people don't want to get into an argument about it. People that dislike it won't recommend it, and those that do like it are happy to let new Tohaa players find out for themselves. After all, Infinity isn't a game where you make one list and then move on, people generally buy extra units to try.

Ah ok, good to know. Looking at all of the Tohaa guys, even if i was to buy 1 of everything and a few extras to fill in the available slots and then just pick from them when the time comes to make a list it still would be 1/5th of what i spent on 40k . But good to know about all that for the Gorgos. He looked sweet. Now you mentioned a little about him in N2, i have the N3 book, but have yet to read it seeing as im still learning from the icestorm starter set i got.

One of everything is how I buy stuff. So far I haven't felt hindered at all by not buying repeat models, and I don't even have everything either for the factions I collect. For models where they expect the average gamer will want repeats, they tend to do them in boxes and have proxy models these days (models equipped with a sidearm that you can use for any profile). The Gorgos, or anything Tohaa, isn't in N3 aside from basic rules shared by every faction. They're in Campaign Paradiso and the supplemental PDFs on the website (army list and weapon list PDFs, to be specific). Also Tohaa heavily use the Linked Team rules, which are in Human Sphere (also available for download on the website) That doesn't mean N3 wasn't a good purchase for a Tohaa player, especially a new player, as it covers the basic mechanics of the game. I wouldn't recommend buying Human Sphere unless you're into the art and fluff, but download the PDF for the rules. Campaign Paradiso is a good buy for a new Tohaa player, as the rules are still relevant and it's got all your Tohaa fluff that's currently available, plus the campaign system if you and your buddies ever want to try it.

AH ok. perfect. Tohaa army looks cool, the only other army that looks fun is Nomad, Aleph, and PanOceania; In that order. The others i dont have any desire to play. I have Nomad and PanO already so i guess i could just add models to nomad and go from there. But any advice on Nomad and Aleph? if to use them or not?
