Ok so I have stripped my DIY Marine Librarian because I have learned many new painting techniques since I started. My question stems from the fact that most SM chapters consider their Librarians to be a part of the chapter and yet also not a part of the chapter. How close to the chapter color scheme would a person paint their librarians? Would their be variations involved? Could I get paint mine to be different and yet show the chapter colors in some way?

If this is in the wrong forum I apologize in advance. I was not quite sure where to post this question.

Most Librarians have Blue armour, the same way that Chaplains have black, it's a symbol of their office, I usually paint them with blue, and add iconography of the chapter, and perhaps a dedicated shoulder pad to chapter.

The 'Codex Standard' is for Librarians to wear blue armour.

Different Chapters follow that more or less stringently, and in many cases different Librarians within a Chapter will take it more or less seriously.

So, long story short: paint your Librarian however you please. You can go all blue with just a Chapter shoulder pad, or Chapter colours with appropriate markings or some part of the armour in blue... or somewhere in between.

I see no reason to not use chapters colours in everything except for a ocasional blue in some places. Shoulder or robes.
Also one can do the opposite and paint blue arnor and robes and/or shoulder in the chapter fashion.

Eldercaveman,

Thank you for a quick reply. I wonder how the blue would hold up to the metallic nature of the color scheme for my chapter. THey are gold with green highlights and silver for weapons and equipment.

It's fairly easy to combine the two. Making a metallic blue isn't hard in the slightest. If you went with a metallic blue for the armor, and then did one of his shoulderpads with the "normal" chapter iconography (which is the general standard) you should be groovy!

Here's a tutorial, even.

Good luck, and I hope that helps!

I asked the same question before painting my Libby.

I had some great responses there so I'll share the jist of it:

1. Paint them what ever makes you happy. They're your army.
2. In accordance to fluff, they're supposed to be BLUE with trimmings from their home chapter.

My Libby is wearing a blue Power Armour with the trademark Dark Angels bone-colored cloak and tabbard.

3. Nevertheless, in accordance to fluff, some chapters refuse to follow the Codex Astartes 'rule'

Conclusion: Do whatever makes you happy!

Mixed-Wing army has positive results thus far!

I had somewhat of a question about this myself at one point, and the 2 Libby's that I have done so far, one for Grey Knights and one for my Deathwing, both wore their respective chapter colored armor, but I did their Robes/Tabards in blue to show color of office.

But words of caution I have for you for your brother Primarchs are strong of will, of thought and of action.

Yeah it's a bit like the 'official' paintjob for the Blood Angel Librarian dreadnought, there was an artical on the GW website on painting them, I no longer think it exists sadly as it was fantastic, it was written by the models designer, and he said he only painted the middle section blue, and the rest red because heaven forbid that it looked like an Ultramarine dreadnought!

I did the complete opposite of this: stayed with typical blue Librarian armor, did the robes in chapter colors. Same concept though. Here's mine:

I personally always prefer to see a strong resemblance of blue on a Librarian, it just makes them easier to pick out. A Grey Knight Libby in Terminator armor in a unit of Terminators all painted GK silver, for me it is very difficult to distinguish the Librarian. Whether you do the robes or armor blue, it helps them stand out. Unless you play Ultramarines...

Ok, so now I have run into a problem....after stripping my Libby I realized that I have a new problem. My Libby is OOP and metal and looking at it I hate the static position of the legs and the cape between the legs. Before I try to re-paint this model does anyone know of a way to fix the legs and cape? Or am I kind of stuck with this model?

If you don't like it, I'd suggest cutting them off at the waist and glueing his top half onto some more dynamic legs. Failing that .. buy a new model.

As for colour. It has already been said but I'm halfway through painting mine and I have opted to give him the standard chapter scheme with a blue should pad. As I have used the actual GW Libby model I hope there won't be any confusion.

I like stuff.

Ok so as I am painting this Libby...I ran into another issue. In order for him to still be viable for gameplay do I need to keep him on that little tiny base? Also, gameplay wise, how high can I model some terrain onto the base?

Most people won't mind a larger base, will he really not fit on a normal sized base? As for height, just be reasonable people will be cool with it. Don't put him on clown stilts

I finally finished my Libby I think that I have also solved the bas question. I decided to base he Libby on the 25mm base and mode scenery around him so that he can be removed for game play. Since this has turned into a WIP I am asking the mod's to move this post into the proper section. Once again I thank everyone who has given me advice.

Work in progress discussions are fine for the regular P&M forum. If you want this moved to the P&M Blogs forum, you're probably going to want to post updated pictures as your project proceeds.
