Get a Riptide! I don't know how it performs in the game, but it looks sweet!!! And I don't even generally like the Tau aesthetic.
I've got my Heldrake painted and ready to go and can't wait to burninate some unfortunates with it.

TheGoatman usually plans the events, and it looks like he hasn't decided yet. If I had to guess, I am thinking it would be May 4th in Westchester, but I honestly don't know until TheGoatman books the room.
As an aside, who else here besides myself and Yakface are all painted? I much prefer to play that way if possible.

I may try to make the next one - I know XM and also have a painted Necron Army. I prefer painted forces but will tesla the hell out of anything - gray or primed - you will suffer!
Also - as a note - Saturday evenings not so good for me - so I'm in on the early time thing.

Hey everyone, so I am planning on doing the next meeting on the 11th of May. I think it is going to have to be in Manhattan Beach again this time, I am still trying to work things out with the place in Weschester, but I am not sure I can get the larger room there for free.
Sorry I have gone silent over the last two weeks or so, life took over for a little bit, then Hordes took over!
Speaking of Warmahordes I just started a Trollblood army and my friend has been showing me the ropes. I will have a tiny army (I think I could play like 20 points) but my friend has a much larger force. Anyone who wants to bring their WarmaHordes we are down to play.
It sounds like we might have a few more people showing up this time which is great, but it might mean we need someone to bring a table and terrain as I only have 2 tables and a mat (Yakface maybe you would be willing to bring your stuff?),
I am wondering if we should set a point value for 40k as well as trying to organize some matches? Last time we sorta just played it by ear, which worked out ok, but I don't want anyone to show up and not be able to play cause that would suck. Anyone have any suggestions on the best way to go about this?
When I contact the on Monday to book the room I will ask if we can use their BBQ and we can have burgers and hotdogs. Its been really nice outside so maybe we can try to pull off a inside out side thing? There were request to start earlier, so I was going to aim to start at 1:00 and go till around 9:00.
I will post the finalized details here in the thread on Monday.

Manhattan Beach is fine with me... evening is fine with me. Starting mid-afternoon and going until midnight or so is fine. Whatever, I am flexible.
I also have a green grassy mat I would be glad to bring down. I have a couple terrain pieces I could bring as well.
As far as number of people... yeah I think we may have a full house this time around, but I wouldn't worry. Hanging out and talking shop while watching games is fun, too. It's a nice way for all of us to spend a weekend away from work and the wives, I think.
I've invited 2 or 3 guys, but not sure if they will show or not. I think at least one of them will.
I'm fine with just showing up with an army and getting pickup games in... or organizing matches is fine, too. As I mentioned, I like to play all painted. I sure would enjoy a 2,000 point game with my Chaos army this time around.
Thanks for setting things up, Matt.

So I put in the request to for a room on May 11th. Another group will be using the room till 12:30, so I requested it starting at 1:30pm, which will give me an hour to set things up. It is once again at Manhattan Beach Community Church and I will ask people to not start new 40k games after 8:30, but I will not kick anyone out mid game as thats the worse.
I still need to negotiate BBQ use so assume that you will have to provide food for yourselves unless I saw otherwise (I will provide refreshments in the form of Soda and water).
I would like to have an idea of how many people are planning to show up, so if you plan on coming please either post in this thread or email me.

Firstly, what is your guys' stance on proxying models? I'm working on collecting/building my full list but neither of them are done yet without some serious proxying (I mean like cardboard bases with no models on them at times.) I would hopefully be much closer to finished by May but I just want to know just in case.
Secondly, I have a box of terrain; would it be superfluous to bring or is terrain a "the more the merrier" kind of thing?

Each gamer has his own preference when it comes to proxying so I won't speak for other players. Some people might not want to play with you because of this, but I know for a fact there are gamers coming that will have no issue with even extreme proxies (they might ask you to put something on the cardboard bases just so you remember something is there when scanning the board. The venue is meant to welcome all gamers so there is room for someone still building their army. I know I don't have everything in my army and use plenty of non-GW models for things. If I were going to play you I would ask if we could try and use some extra models from other players to stand in for things. I have two armies so I would most likely ask you to use some of my other army models as proxies over empty cardboard bases. If you are a Necron player as your avatar suggest you are welcome to use some of my Necrons if you are respectful with them. My army is have painted but its better than empty bases. I would say as long as your terrain isn't a huge hassle to transport bring it. It is pretty hard to get a solid idea of how many people are going to show up, and its always better to have too much terrain than not having enough to fill a table

Man, I am psyched for the 11th! I'll be there for sure, but probably later on - like 3:00 or 4:00 as I've got to work until mid-afternoon. I've invited two other cool guys with painted armies, but still waiting on confirmation.
Anyone up for a big-ass game? I have a ton of new Chaos stuff that I want to try out. 2,000 - 2,500 non-competitive would be awesome! All painted. Single force org, double force org, no force org, whatever! I just want to play a big game.
Let me know!

I'll be there from start until around 7 - to get in as much action as I can - have to bail then to make it to league soccer. Unfortunately, I don't have any terrain or boards to offer. Maybe in the future.

At this point in my life, I have no desire to ever play a game of 40k against faux-models.
I can barely handle playing against unpainted models, to tell you the truth...however I can stand that so long as the player is actually getting stuff painted from one session to the next and not just perpetually putting unpainted stuff out there.
I typically won't ever even proxy stuff...I just suck it up and play with whatever models I do have.
Although not to sound hypocritical, I do make an exception for proxy models for a while after a new codex comes out if people are looking to test out what new units they want to run (I'm doing that right now with my Tau), but again, so long as the player is showing that they're currently working on actually getting those models bought and painted from session to session.
But that's just me. There are always going to be those with less (or more) stringent requirements to play.

Well for what I gathered last meeting you have been playing for well over a decade, it is a lot easier for veterans to field good armies with out any proxies at all.
I tired playing WYSISYG the other day with my DA and it was awful. not being able to run melta guns (because plasma guns came in DV and I haven't invested in a third tactical squad yet) is lame. And all the plasma pistols the DA leaders come modeled with are just a point drain.
I agree with you that if the player is showing no signs of progress on his or her army it can be frustrating, that being said I think there needs to be more tolerance towards those of us who are really are trying to expand our forces and paint them up (I got my LRC painted to a table top standard from last time we played and the Librarian on the bike painted). We to want to try new things in our list and have variety too and it is disheartening to hear people not want to play with me solely because I haven't had 5 years to finish building and painting my army.

I feel the same as Yakface regarding proxies. And I really appreciate WYSIWYG, but understand the difficulties it presents.
I also strongly prefer to play painted forces, but players who are working on their forces are an exception.
Good opponents is priority 1, but I feel that painted forces sans proxies is a part of that (albeit second to personality and quality of the player).
Excited to game with you gents!

Hey Goatman
I just wanted to point out to you that within the past 7 years, I've painted four 40k armies and one Fantasy army. All while working full time (often way more than full-time). At the very very most I'll get in 8 hours of painting a week, but it's usually more like 3 or 4 while I watch TV. Sometimes it's not even that. I'll sometimes go 2 months without even touching a brush. Then again sometimes I'll make a huge push to get stuff done in the week before a tournament or something. It varies.
It takes me about 2 years to "finish" an army once I start, and even then I am usually working on two or three armies at a time. It doesn't take anything like 5 years to get an army done if you are being even semi-diligent.
Thokt, how long did it take you to finish 1500 points of Crons? Like 3 or 4 months? Granted, that was pretty darn fast, but still...
It can definitely be be done.
Having said that, I totally understand what you are saying. I know plenty of people who absolutely hate painting and are really more interested in the gaming side of the hobby (Sergio is like this). They're cool with playing with a table full of gray plastic models. And that's totally fine.
But, for me, not only do I put in the blood sweat and tears to paint my models, but I am in the hobby primarily for the pageantry and aesthetics. It's hard for me to get excited facing off against a sea of gray plastic. As Yakface said, I'm just sort of at a point in my life where I'd rather not if possible.
I don't mind the odd minor proxy - that flamer is really a melta gun, that power fist is really a lightning claw, etc. No big deal. But if you want to use cardboard cutouts and call a Necron Lord a Space Wolf Rune Priest or something like that, I just wouldn't enjoy playing against that.
But don't worry, dude. Trudge along, make a good faith effort to get your stuff painted, and try to field as much painted as you can every game, and I'd be glad to play you from time to time. I don't think you need to worry too much. Also, I would be more than happy to teach you techniques to getting armies done quickly if you're interested. You'd be surprised how quickly you can knock stuff out.
And it also seems like there are a couple people in the group who don't mind playing unpainted, so there shouldn't be any shortage of opponents for unpainted players.
To sum up - it's all good and I think everyone will be happy.

Xeno - I believe I began painting my Tron Crons in mid January and finished at the end of March.
I'm a big proponent of painting in front of the TV - it gets the job done. I spent my first two weeks painting at my work bench in my garage and finished one Ghost Ark. I transfered my paint station to my living room and began making real progress, as well as enjoying painting more. And now I have a fully painted force!
I think we'll have a great time come May 11th!

I honestly don't think I am working at a super slow pace. In the 8 months I have been collecting DA I have painted 2 tac squads, 1 dev squad, 3 bikes, 1 lib, 1 lib on a bike, 1 commander, 1 Chaplin, 1 squad of termies, 1 squad of knights, a LRC, a dreadnought, and a rhino. I have also built 2 tables and a bunch of terrain. I prefer to paint with music on, I find painting relaxing and centering and try to make time for it several times a week. Honestly I wouldn't want to turn my painting time into something that was forced or rushed. To me its not something to "get through" but something to enjoy.
As I said I understand wanting to enjoy the awesomeness of playing with fully painted armies, which is why I am working hard to get as much done as I can. I also wasn't suggesting it should take 5 years to paint an army, just that most veterans have had a lot more time to get it done.
Also I imagine that while you were working on army 3 and 4 you were able to play with armies 1 and 2, which gave you variety in the games you played. Right now if I don't want to run the same list over and over I have to play with unpainted models. I also imagine that army 1 took you the longest to paint as you got better and faster at painting over the years.
I worry that if the people who have the best knowledge of the game and coolest looking armies are unwilling to play with new players, many new players will get discouraged from putting in the time and effort to finish armies.
That being said Yakface was very nice, friendly, and good spirited in our game last month, despite my half painted force. It doesn't seem like the other folks I meet were unwilling to welcome new players either so I doubt this will be a problem.

I don't care how slow someone is, as long as they're making progress each session, personally.
Lord knows, I am about the slowest painter in the world when I'm trying to paint at my best level, so I empathize.
Although on the flip-side when I do promise myself I won't field something until it is painted, that sure pushes me to keep working to get it done.
