What do people think of the different scoring options available to an Armoured Battle Group force? Let's assume that we want a fully Guard force, so only full ABG lists or ABG with Guard allies are allowed. I am trying to construct a russ based army that can advance up the field, yet I cannot nail down how I want my scoring units to work. The main options that I see are as follows:
- Keep a pure ABG list and go for either AF squads or AF vets. I am not convinced of the viability of this though, as you have very few troop slots and AF vets are expensive and under-gunned.
- Ally IG with mechanised platoons or vets. This would create a pretty standard mech list, although being limited to 2 vet squads would hurt.
- Ally IG foot platoons. Could these advance behind a russ wall or would they get gunned down?

I have been thinking of this as well. Have you seen the new FAQ for the IA1e2? The vets have tank hunter now.
The two answers I have come up with but not been able to test are;
1) run a commissar LR and a (allied) foot swarm to buffer it. Look at what Ailros has been doing recently and you should have a decent idea how this would work.
2) This idea may fail horribly but I like the models; run the vets with two meltas and centaurs and run a bunch of short range LR or thunderers. Advance up the field with the centaurs hiding behind the tanks (centaurs are tiny so you should be able to completely hide them) and take out the enemies troops with the tanks and the tanks with your troops at 24" range. (actually kind of like Ailros' last battle post, hmm, you can tell I just read his last 3 battle reports can't you)
I also have been toying with running a typhus zombie horde with ABG allied tank squads to provide fire power. But that is HERESY!

Option #4: objectives, I have tanks. Don't bother with scoring units at all, just kill every scoring unit your opponent brought. And then kill everything else for the automatic win.
Option #5: C: IG allies for a Harker squad (with camo cloaks for 2+ cover) behind an aegis line with a quad gun. Now you have one scoring unit, and with so many tanks on the table who is going to be able to even think about wasting attention on a unit with a 2+ cover save?
Option #6: bring your loaded dice, always roll "warlord is a scoring unit".
I've been playing around with the list and the armored first veterans are just too expensive, while platoons take away from the "lots of tanks" theme and give you a list that isn't really any different than C: IG with Leman Russes in heavy support.

LOL, option #4 the greatest option ever.
Failing that option #6 could work.
-Too bad the grey knight commander guys ability doesn't affect allies. Actually grey knight inquisition would work great for supplying scoring bodies.

What about armored fist platoons from an allied IG force? The tanks are providing the firepower, so just use the regular armored fist platoon to get you a few dirt cheap chimeras with scoring units. Advance them up behind some thunderers and have other tanks provide ranged support.
Man I really need to get this book...

No point. You get armored fist squads already from the ABG list, so there's no reason to take allies for them (unless you just need to fill the minimum allied FOC slots to unlock more fast/heavy options).

Well there are FoC concerns. My latest list, for example, has three demolishers in troop slots. If I wanted to take four scoring units, I would need to use an allied force.
At the moment, I am on the fence between mechanised infantry and conscripts.

TBH the FOC really isn't an issue. 4x squads in Chimeras would be 500 points minimum, plus another 150 for the HQ. So a minimum of 650 points spent on infantry, at which point your list isn't looking all that different from a standard codex list that happens to take some Leman Russes. If you're really taking advantage of the options the ABG list offers you're going to have a lot fewer points spent on infantry and the FOC limits aren't going to be a problem.
And don't forget that command/commissar tanks give you five more tank slots in addition to troops, so you only need to worry about troops slots for the demolisher/executioner/punisher.
