Hi guys

My friend has said he is going to use a carnifex squad with a tyrant guard in to distribute wounds to each carnifex using look out sir.

Now to me I don't know a great deal about nids but I don't see how this is possible.

1) carnifex is a monstrous creature so surely you can't have a squad of them?
2) a carnifex is not a character so can't look out sir unless a tyrant guard is at the front
3) not sure wether you can actually put a tyrant guard with them? He said it has a lash whip so I think it is the tyrant guard could be wrong?

I'm very confused and convicted it can't be legit to look out sir to multiple monstrous creatures which have 4 wounds each

1) You can take a brood of 1-3 carnifex's all fex's in the brood must have the same wargear.
3) No Tyrant Guard, can only be joined by Independent Characters, or HiveTyrants including Swarmlord.
2) Now irrelevant with the answer to 2.

1. Most Monstrous Creatures are 1 per unit. Carnifexes come 1-3 per unit.
2. Carnifexes are not characters.
3. Tyrant Guard are not characters either.

It is more likely that he plans to attach a Tyranid Prime (who is an IC) armed with a Bonesword and Lashwhip. This is legal. Furthermore, assuming all 3 Carnifexes are in base contact with the Prime, you randomly determine which is the closest and it stays the closest for the unit firing (or the given Init step).

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

I'm willing to bet your friend will be using a unit of 2 Carnifex with a Tyranid Prime attached. It's a 3 wound, t5 3+ model with Synapse and is an Independent Character, plus it can be given a Lash Wip and Bonesword. That fits the case that you've given.

This is most likely.

Tyranid prime that's the fella, I've told him that its such a cheese unit that I've refused to play it. Im presuming that the prime will be at the front and he will look out sir with each one constantly until they are all down to 1 wound each

It isnt cheese. Each unit shooting fixes one Carnifex as being the closest for THAT units shooting, so if you fire 4 krak missiles or 4 lascannon at him, then one carnifex is likely to die. Rinse and repeat. It has no invulnerable save, and is very very expensive.

Eh, 4 krak missiles, Prime tanks one and feeds 3 to a Fex. Since the Prime will usually have regen and you'd be a fool to not Endurance the unit, between FNP and IWND its not that bad.

It's 100% the opposite of cheese. It's a slow and very expensive unit utilising tactics to mitigate the inherent weaknesses of a Carnifex brood. Smart list building and tactics utilising substandard units ≠ cheese.

I have a peanut allergy. It's really inconsiderate.

I'd love to see someone field Carnifexes. No one ever seems to field them, preferring Tervigons and Trygons.

I'd love to use them but they're just way to expensive for what they do. Any TMC can smash for a S10 hit if they need to and all the others are much more cost effective.

In Nos' explanation it was assumed you had moved so he cannot make any LOS, just unloading onto a single Fex.

Regardless, Fex's are too pricey for what they do/can do imo vs the other goodies in the dex.
