Is the Storm Eagle a viable choice? Every time I think of the 300 point cost it makes me nervous.

It looks like a great model, but I don't know anyone that has one or seen one in play.

Just looking for any input from more experienced players.

I assume, worst case, it will be an amazing 300 point flying target.

You would have to take C:SM as an ally to use it. SW don't get flyers.

wrong

and i quote form page 28 of IA: Areonautica 'A storm eagle gunship is a fast attack choice for a codex: space marines, Dark Angels, Space Wolves or Black templars army.

its the only SM flyer SW have access to...

otherwise

its a big risk- it either does 'meh' or scares the crap out of folks, but its really a big stormraven with a few extra guns its up to you

they do look realyl nice.

But i think it would be one of those things you would only ever use in big games where the loss of a 300 point model isn't so much of a dent.

So....Apoc basically.

Nay IMHO as (correct me if i'm wrong) it is a H.S choice and for 300 points you could get 10missile launchers, then there goes your 300pt Birdy.

No, it's a huge points investment for what is basically a Stormraven with a few frills.

If you're worried about the flier meta-game, then guard allies are your best bet for dealing with them (sabres and vendettas). Or, SM allies. Which are actually not terrible when combined with SWs. You get the stormraven and the flying guppy fish. Couple that with a DP assault from SWs and a solid firebase from the SM in the form of a TFC and some LFs.

In 6th, SW are probably the best allies out there. It's all down to the fact that their "allies tax" of an HQ and Troops choice are both awesome. So you could easily take an allied SW force that actually amounts to move than your main force if you wanted them for anti-flier.

If you like the model, when then take it, but it's not really good.

Star Trek taught me so much. Like, how you should accept people, whether they be black, white, Klingon or even female...

Storm Eagles are decent anti-infantry flyers and transports, but if you're looking for anti-air then going up to 310pts for a gunship is just a waste of points.

the model is quite nice so i suppose you could buy one and play it as a Stormraven for smaller games instead.

That's what a friend of mine is planning to do.
