I have decided on the new army I am going to start this year and it is going to be Tyranids (yea I know it only took me three months. Indecision is a cruel mistress). Anywho I always said if I did chose tyranids I wanted them to be on a jungle base as that just seemed right in my mind. Also being an avid starcraft player I wanted to paint them like the standard zerg colors (pictures below of example). The other idea I had was to do everything in my power to make them look as much like things out of borderlands 2 as possible.

For the basing I am just curious as how one would do jungle bases. I have a good idea for normal units, but with the MC like Hive Tyrants and Tervigons what would make sense to have on that base, and how would I pull it off. Any and all advice in this situation is going to be helpful I think so just give it to me

and

These two are the best I could do, the first a simple google search and the second courtesy of the army painter feature here on dakka. I know they aren't a lot to go off of but what do you think of the general idea. Also what paints would you say I need?

I hope I am not asking too much of you. I am really glad I migrated to dakkdakka the conditions over on reddits warhammer subs are just god awful.

Thanks,
Nafarious

Might be the wrong forum.

Sadly I can't help on this one as I've never tried it before.

if you're willing to ditch the jungle thing here is a great thread to a tyranid basing: http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/407768.page

Dammit, saw the thread title and thought. I know what I'm linking. Although the technique in the linked thread could easily be adapted to create a jungle theme.

Also I like the paint scheme, put I would maybe get a few cheap gangs and do some test models, to work out the shades of colour you want etc.

Right. I already bought the army, but I will definitely test on some gants first. And secondly I am also interested in doing creep bases (again from starcraft) that may be a good tutorial to use. I will continue to look.

Well you can always test multiple schemes, on a few gants then choose the one you like, keep it on your desk as a reference the strip the others.

I think I will do that. I plan on painting with washes. The bases are really confusing me right now though. I am at a cross between ruined temple, and acidic wastes.

Prime with Rustoleum High Heat Almond and then wash with the Argax Earthshade for the body. Use whatever purple turns you on to base the carapace and then either wash with Nuln Oil or whatever the purple wash is. Use the red wash in the areas you have colored in as pink.

I actually use Krylon to prime, but I was figuring I could prime it white and use a wash to get a good brown.

I've never been super creative with basing but for a jungle look I would do a Lustrian Undergrowth texture paint and wash Nuln oil for the basic touch. Then probably the Death World Basing kit for different plant life, jungle ruins, and vines. Then probably fill it out with regular green grass. Just my own thoughts.

As for the brown wash over white, that will not get you anywhere close to the sample brown you have shown. I'd suggest using a single Termagant as a test model. They have a little bit of everything; body, ribs, shell, gun, teeth, etc. You can play around with how you want it to look and it shouldn't take up too long or be too hard to fix.

Canifex Quote: I love Rhinos. They are crunchy on the outside, and soft and chewy on the inside.

The reason I suggested the Almond, is because it has a bit of brown in it already, which will accentuate the brown wash.

Here's what the almond primer looks like with my brown wash.

For a deeper brown, you could start off with Krylon Camo Khaki and then wash with Nuln Oil or Argax Earthshade ... you'll need to experiment around a bit.

FYI, Chrome tagged that as a malware site.

Well, this is more terrain oriented, but maybe it'll give you some ideas as to how you can do bases:

Go hit the local fish store and check out the aquarium decorations.

AND Hobby Lobby, or course

Why is it that only those who have never fought in a battle are so eager to be in one?

Will do. I have a lot of experience with basing. I just find it hard to come up with thoughts of how to base.

This is perfect for me, I'm not the world's best painter, maybe not even fifth best, but with this awesome site I feel like I have some potential. Thanks for the link.

On building Tyranid army flow chart.

Micro Art does jungle bases:

I have some of the industrial bases, they're pretty good quality though a little expensive (you can find them on Ebay, too).

You could also add the Jungle Tuft or Summer Undergrowth that Army Painter sells (or find a generic version):

I've seen som really good results from using pieces of plastic aqaruim plants. And a pretty good sized bag of those will only cost $10 or so. Easily enough to do an army with.
