Hi, all.

I'm still playing around with my first WH40K army, and I keep changing my mind when it comes to the bases. What I want is for my Cadians to look like they're in a forest. I've tried painting sand broen and using static grass, but it always looks like mud.

This time I tried lighter colours, with the addition of leaves. I think they're too much of a contrast, though. I think i'll try darker leaves next time. Thoughts?

I feel like the leaves could be scattered a little more, but I really like the look of them. I think the colors are fine. Darker might make them blend in with the uniform, and it's good to differentiate a bit.

I think it works. The leaves are a great touch. Maybe some green that's a bit more verdant, but yours may be. Hard to tell from pictures sometimes.

If you want darker leaves, try going Martha Stewart on the situation. By that, I mean raid your spice cabinet. Plenty of cooking spices make great leaf litter. (Particularly oregano or parsley, but there are others in varying shades and colors.)

It might alter the odor of your troop transport, depending on how much you use, but depending on which spice you use, you might find that "it's a good thing."

The light is kind of washing the colors out on the base, but it looks pretty foresty to me. I realize that they're cadians and not catachans, but it may look pretty sweet to tie some of those leaves in on the models themselves. Like the in the camo-nets on tanks or maybe on their guns. May be too unprofessional for cadians though.

Thanks for the replies, guys.

Here's another shot, this time without any direct light shining on the model. I'm finding out how difficult it actually is to photo 28mm models, and make them look good.

I did think of gluing some leaves onto the model; sort of a foliage camouflage look, but I decided against it. Maybe if/when I get some Kasrkins I may try this.

That looks good, and certainly isn't distracting from the model.

I like the look of the basing. My only suggestion, and this is only my opinion, is perhaps to make the leaves a bit smaller. The total coverage area is good but just maybe more smaller leaves.

I was thinking that myself, however, that's how they came. They're a pre-made pack of model leaves.

Thanks. That was a fear of mine, that the base would be too distracting from the model.

I don't think it'd be unprofessional for them to have the leaves worked into camo netting for their vehicles, persons, weapons. That's what snipers and special ops in today's military do to blend in and break up profiles.

However, given the size of the leaves, I wouldn't use them on the guardsmen's weapons unless you wanted to trim them down.

I think the size is all right. I still think you should separate them a bit more, though.

Magic...

Nah, I bought them, I found a modelling company that sells 'em by the bag.

Antenociti's Workshop sells them.

I think secret weapon also does them too.

There used to be another company, that was Skull something, but I can't remember their name, or their website to see if they still exist.

EDIT - Skullcrafts was their name, not sure if they are in business anymore though.

They look great. I came across a flock earlier today that is labeled as dark leaf litter. I imagine there are other tones. It was online so I didn't get a real good look at it but that also may be a good idea.

They might be painted but the "leaves" themselves aren't manufactured, they're seeds. They're birch seeds. I happened to be escorting my niece on her bike when I saw a load collected in the gutter so I returned bag in hand to grovel by the roadside to collect them up.

You could try cutting them in half if they're too big. If the guardsmen are supposed to be in the forest, I don't think I'd use green grass, as it doesn't grow well under trees. Coffee grounds or tea leaves makes good leaf mould.

Nice guardsmen, and I wouldn't worry about colours too much, it's the 41st milllenium in a universe that is infinite, grass can be orange on some worlds. Like the use of the birch seeds. I think I'm gonna have to get some and try it out.
