Just remember that IG is THE most expensive army to collect. Not just financially, but it takes forever to paint them and it's a pain to move them around too!!!
Example - 1 swuad of veterans with plasma guns riding in a chimera. You may run 6 of these in a mech-army.
1 pack of cadians = $30
3 plasma guns = good luck - usually you spend 5-15 dollards per plasma gunner
1 Chimera = $30-40 depending on where / how you get it.
The bottom line is, for one 170 point troop choice, you can end up spending over a hundred dollars!!!!!!!
I love guard BTW. I don';t know what you are trying to accomplish, or how you run your Grey Knights, but there are basically 2 themes for using guard as an ally for a MEW army. One is to get a huge blob of units who can march up front and utilize psykers, etc. to make them very hard to move. This may qwork best for Space Wolves through (with Njall and Rune Priests)
If I were you, I'd start by getting 1 Vendetta Gunship, 1 squad of veterans with plasma or melta guns (don't mix them) and a primaris psyker. If you run some armor in your list, then I'd add a tank of your choice. I can't resist taking Manticores. If you roll well, they will f' stuff up badly. I am also a big fan of regular Leman Russ Battle Tanks (WITH NO UPGRADES).
EXAMPLE #2
IG faction 475 points
Primaris Psyker
Veterans, Plasma-Gun x3
Vendetta Gunship
Manticore
the veterans and the psyker can ride in the vendetta if you want!
I wouldn't consider taking 1000 point allied detachment. If you want 1000 points of guard, it should be stand-alone. The only way to use 1000 points effectively as an allied force, is to have some massive infantry blobs...

(TOTAL $105)
Most expensive... How cute.
Immolator / Rhino - $35
Heavy Sister - $14
Special Sister $9.9
Superior - $12.75
7 Normal Sisters - $5.25ea - 36.75
$108.4
That's a minimum sized troop squad.

Haha, its almost unfair compairing prices to SoB. Back to the OP, for us to make suggestions we kinda need to know what you're doing with you're GK. IG have got quite a diverse range of options for how to field them, probably more than most other armies IMO.

Just to sort any confusion out my grey Knights would be allied to the guard to go with the fluff, and they will be holding the flanks/ taking objectives/counter attacking. For the guard i love the idea of a firing line of platoons taking on everything supported by tanks to crush everything. Btw painting is no issue as it is my favorite part off the hobby

For a firing line army, you're probably looking at platoons supported by artillery. So a couple of manticores, maybe a LRBT, and a couple of platoons behind an ADL with just guardsmen squads with autocannons/lascannons and meltaguns/flamers. Then either a Lord Commissar or a CCS with standard to glue it all together.
Come to think of it whacking in a troupe of LR demolishers in with the GK flankers would be nice.
So could do; ~1000
CCS - 85
lascannon, regimental standard
Platoon - 300
PCS - 40
autocannon
4xIG - 260
autocannon, flamer
Platoon - 210
PCS - 50
Lascannon
2xIG - 140
lascannon
2 manticores - 220
demolisher - 160ish (cant remember, dont have codex handy)
ADL - 50
Its pretty rough and static, but hey its a fire base and the manticores can strip of hull points and lascannons finish nicely.

Basilisks are sort of a 'fluffy' cool I find. On the field, they're not too good unless the points size gets to like 3000+. Then with a big enough field they really shine, so apocalypse pretty much. Their main drawback is the minimum 36" range.
Manticores on the other hand have a very broad range field, whilst still having a minimum of 24", this is not so much of an issue. Since each doomeagle rocket gives of d3 templates, theres huge coverage. Really the only thing is that its ap4, not the basilisks ap3. But being S10 and ordnance it makes it very efficient at stripping hull points off vehicles. Also the idea that being able to fire 4 times is a draw back is a misconception, since in reality you wont often get more than 4 opportunities to fire anyway. Probably the biggest drawback is that the manticore is not part of a battery and so each manticore takes up a FOC slot. But at this points level that shouldn't be an issue.
But if you're wanting artillery batteries for the sake of it or theme -theme's important if you've got it- then go with the medusa. Upgrade it to have bastion breacher shells and then there's nothing in the 36" up to 48" range that doesn't fear you. Plus they're a bit cheaper than the manticores. But note the medusas (sometimes) significant drawback, it can only direct fire.
In terms of tactics for a fire line/base army, pretty much just stock up on heavies and point and shoot. But with the lack of armour you really want some fortification like an ADL to protect the guys. Then you also want some sort of Ld boosting commander so you're guys dont run away. Being quite static, its nice having barrage artillery like manticores since you cant be forced to move them by the enemy in order to hit something -i.e. medusas-.

Firstly, don't take advice from people who don't know their rules (cf. people complaining about basilisk's minimum range)
Secondly, as mentioned, the first thing you need is infantry and some real special weapons for them to carry, such as melta or plasma guns. Every guard army should have at least 3 10-man squads of some sort once you get to 1000 points or so, and with the best weapon upgrades that they can carry.
Once you get that done, then you will just have to ask yourself if you're going for vets (in which case, buy yourself some chimeras), or platoons (in which case, buy more infantry).

I like the idea of platoons so I think ill go with them. But I thought that the Basilisk could still fire below 36 inches but only directly even then any ideas to cover that blind spot? Automatically Appended Next Post: Thanks for all the feed back guys ill work out an army list and get it posted ASAP for constructive criticism
