Hello all,

I've been considering starting a FOW force but have a few questions. I'm transitioning from 40k so I'm not 100% sure on how the army list system works. I understand their is a basic rule book in 3rd edition but how do I go about forming lists for specific armies? If I wanted to get into mid-late war Russian models where would I start?

Also, is Russia a good place to start from a competitive stand point? I was thinking either an infantry mob with artillery or a tank mob with t34s.

Thanks for any help.

Soviets are a tad tricky with a few of their rules but nothing too breaking imo.

If you want specific lists rather than the generic lists from the main book then for late war go for Red Bear and Eastern Front for mid war. Each one contains a multitude of soviet lists

I would recommmend starting with the PSC models and getting BF for command units,PSC weapons set and Zvezda for planes, katys and trucks.
Also eventually you will want a copy of REd Bear. The new Forces book is ok. But Fortress Europe is better for options.IIt is the the old forces style book from 2nd edition.I started with it and a 2nd edition HArdback.I am still fielding the occasional force from it.

Well the other thought is Late War or Mid War...

For mid-war I went with an infantry/artillery hoard but that is going to be very expensive. (A lot cheaper when I did it...)

For late war, I thought of a tank force... Up to 5 of your T34s can be T34/85 so one thought is to go 5 Tank companies...

1 T34/85
5 T34/85
5 T35/85
3 Su152

Then some infantry, some artillery and perhaps some IL-2s...
Another option is to put Tank Riders on everything...

Kind of gives you an answer for everything...

I still like the T-34/85 tanks. Also the good thing about the PSC set is that you can make both and the Zvezda katys, are easier to build also do not have to worry about the high prices of BF and the Miscasted parts.Theese models a horrible about miscasts from BF.

Other than the cost, how about a soviet motorized force with two light companies of Valentine VIIIs? 620 points for 20 tanks with 6pdrs. Still leaves you a lot of points to build your force around and Valentines still have decent armor.

I will warn that for late-war, the T-34 horde is a bit of a white elephant. Avoid it like the plague. It was great in the last edition and it's still getting some love because of its legacy. But it's very much past its prime, the new assault rules have made them essentially non-competitive. The problem is that all the new late-war lists have an abundance of AT weapons in their infantry platoons and the T-34s just can't make into assault anymore.

As a whole, the Russians are towards the bottom end of the power scale in that time period. They've still got some quirky mechanised lists and I harbour hopes that the next set of books might give them some solid lists.

I started with the Udarny (Soviet Guard) infantry a few years ago and they are a lot fun to play. I went artillery heavy, I had one or two lists that had over 30 guns in it! It was a blast to play, you just have to get used to taking handfuls of models off of the table every turn. But it seems like psychology plays such a part of the game that some of my opponents had lost by the time I put all of models on the table. It's a scary thing to face more artillery stands than you have infantry stands. Unfortunately this was in the previous edition and the Soviets don't play as well with the newer rules.

Do the 6pdrs have HE ammo? Because if they do, thats very nasty.
