Something struck me leafing through the new WoC book.
The 'chaos giant' in there really does have the same rules as in the WFB rule book from circa 1990.
So, oddly, this is one thing that never got changed.
Is that beacuse they are great?
Is is because people like using them?
Or is it because people never really use them, and GW just keep reprinting the same rules that people ignore?

No one really uses them from what I've seen. They're only really good as a anti-monster monster and as WoC there's numerous things that can perform this role better for cheaper and can do other things.

I think the reason the rules haven't changed is he is in 3 books. It's harder to update him when two armies have him still.

I see one once in a while. It is fun. Very good in a monster fight.

I've used the Slavegiant twice in the previous Ogre army book. (back when they weren't stubborn)

1st time: Locked up with a bonegiant and did nothing but 'eat butt him turn after turn 'til the end of the game.

2nd time: Slipped and fell against goblins, got swarmed over and chopped to pieces.

The life of a stupid giant...

I used to always run one in my beastmen list but a bad roll cost me a date at the top table in a touney so I've benched them

I think it's kept in for nostalgia. I kind of want to try him in a silly game, but I don't ever see myself taking him seriously.

I usually run one with my Beastmen. I love the model and his little special rules. His best game was when he took out a Necrosphinx and a Warsphinx for me without taking a wound from either. Worst showing was when he charged into the same combat as my Gors to help them out, then fell over and killed my own BSB (with the Beast Banner).

I play one with ogre's once in a while, they are kinda effective if they work though.

However I think the only reason they are kept the same price is that one giant isn't more effective then another, what with them being in a buncha books.

I've seen a O&G army running dual giants on one flank to mixed effect.

They're in there for the fun effect and I think people would actually complain if they changed them (aside from maybe lowering their cost or something)

For my Beastmen I always use two, as for the Giants in my WoC army they also have a place in it too, granted I have not read the new book but until that day I do I will use them.

The only good Giant is a slanneshi. Does it still give slanneshi giants ASF?

Whenever I think about buying a giant, I recall 8th hating monsters with a passion and then drop the idea.

It's +1 Initiative now, which isn't bad; I4 Giants will make other monsters cry.

Mixed reactions then - I get the impression that they are not for 'serious' play - but - some people suggest they can be very effective

Pretty much. They suck in competitive matches but are fun to play *if* they make it to melee. If you like the models and can get some for cheap, buy them. Just don't take them in comp lists. They are fun to use.

I have and done well, but this seems to be common opinion on them. The model however is very much filled with awesomness

Well, it depends on your meta. The problem is that Giants have no saves (and really, a possible 6+ ward save is useless) thus they are prone to die in a single round of shooting. Dwarves naturally kill them, same goes for Empire, Goblins kill them in the blink of an eye (war machines + Goblin archers with poison attacks, hell, even Mangler Squigs...), Skaven...maybe even more. A lot of other armies got similar, but not as effective means.

It's a pity, I'd love to see more monsters, especially Giants on the field, because the models are so cool, but they are a good points sink I can invest in other stuff. Like more squigs

My meta is Elf gallore and hordes of unwashed Nigth Goblins, so they seldom live past turn two or at most three. But by then the line of Infernal guard has advanced backed by cannon fire and my K`daai Destroyers. I take one or two as a chaff unit of sorts albeit a somewhat pricy one. But the looks of horror on the faces of my enemies when they fall down across their regiment is always worth it

8th monsters are getting better/scarier. Once more books get better and IF cannons got nerfed, you would take giants.

But Ogre giant < hellblaster. WoC giant < whatever cannon. O&G giant < doom diver/Arachnarok (which can smear a lot of monsters). Beastmen < everything, ahahahaha, j/k.

Right now there isn't a counter to monsters that is needed that can't be gotten elsewhere by giant-users in a more reliable fashion. And giants are very unpredictable vs. regular troops.

I always take at least 2 in my Night Goblins, some times 3. My buddy usually takes one in his ogre army and every once in a while in his WoC. Giants are great and can dish out a lot of damage. 2 D6 strength 6 hits from jump up and down is kinda cool and nothing beats yell and bawl, it really ticks off VC players.

I will agree they are a little too pricy they sould be more like 175ish. Also they sould go back to how they were in to the days of 3rd & 4th when the were toughness 6.

My friends and I are going to try the Chaos Siege giant from throne of chaos, he gets an armour save and some other stuff. But he is still a little pricy.

It's time to go full Skeletor

I also think an option of armor/scaly skin/regen might help them

Why reserve armor for just siege giants?

I don't think they are too expensive, their price is fine as they are real melee beasts. The problem is that cannons are too strong.

I feel as though Giants are the biggest hit or miss kind of unit in the game. They can be so good, that its kind of ridiculous, or so bad thats its a hilarious waste of points.

I have also seen a duak flank guard with giants. But also seen them run up the front and into whatever as just a softener. Giants really have their own thing going on, its difficult to place.

Woc giants, like all things woc, are the best in the game now. They can buy either +1T, S, I, or a 6+ ward. All of which are pretty good and they're fairly cheap.

lol'd.

I actually made myself get a giant...saw that superb proxy:

I was like "feth it, for friendlies, yeah!" and...well...they need a buff. Like, really. They are not even close to be viable. Even if they make it into melee, they are about as effective as your average melee unit and that just isn't enough for a 200 pts model. Give them the Stonehorn USR aka 1/2 wounds lost, lower their points cost, give them more defense - something. They really, really need a buff.

Played a giant once when I was playing as Beastmen, by the second turn it was in combat with a treeman, it died two turns later...... I've never used one since, except in a giant version of bloodbowl.

Woc +1 I really helps it go first. If a giant goes 2nd, it can really be annoying. But if you do one of the, I win combat, that's pretty nice.

Also the +1T which makes standard ogres need a 6 to wound.
