I'm thinking of going to a Tournament this August. I still don't have all the rules/nuances down for 6th ed. In fact I haven't played a game of 40K since 5th.

Is 4-5 months long enough you think to get adjusted from 5th to 6th ed? My army is built so while I paint it up before the Tournament I plan to get in a couple games a week.

I'm not looking to dominate in the tournament... but I'd like to at least have it seem like I know what I'm doing.

What do you folks think?

Hard to say, really. Everybody learns at a different pace.

Realistically, yes. You should be just fine. I suggest that you should try to play against people who are already versed in the 6th edition rules. They will be able to show you the ropes.

Depends on how often you play. I got 6th when it came out but am very unfamiliar as I do not get to play often. Couple a week should be good.

I think it really depends. I always struggled with 5th, even though I was playing before it came out. I grasped 6th pretty easily, though. I'm not sure if it's just easier, more intuitive somehow, or if it's a personal thing. I should think 4-5 months should be good enough to grasp the fundamentals.

Plenty of time if you are just looking to play.

As has been stated, it depends on YOU. I've been playing 6th with some frequency (generally a couple games a month) since it released and yet I still find myself struggling with some stuff. As an example, today I had a game and pretty much had a mental breakdown on psychic powers (though, to be fair, it is only my second game with an army that actually USES psykers, so this is probably forgivable).

If you're playing a couple of games a week, that should be plenty of time to be conversant. You may still forgot or miss the occasional fine point (as there are a LOT of niggling little rules and changes and tweaks to USRs and other areas), but overall that's a good time period to get it solidly down.

I played a tourney last august right after the book came out. There really is no need to wait, just jump in and have fun. If you win some games great, if not, hey its a learning experience right? If you wait to play until you got all the rules down, you will never play a tourney as a single FAQ update can completely change a lot of gameplay.

Just get out there and play and have fun. Thats what I do personally. I love the competitive spirit that the FLGS has and can't wait to play one this sunday (first one I've had a chance to in months!)

I agree, Take your time but 4-5 months is plenty especially if you will be doing 2 games a week. make sure not to burn yourself out with playing and painting though

Entirely depends on how often you play.

If you play once or twice a week, sure, a couple months should be sufficient. Although you will likely have edition hangover for a long time afterwards.

4-5 months means nothing if youve done nothing but read the rules and theorycraft, but if youve played 1-2 games a week for 4-5 months you should be fine.
Ive been playing bout 6 months or so, i'd say only recently i started doing good (usually bout 80% of the time i have one damn close game instead of getting plastered every game, means im actually putting up a fight now)

4-5 months should be plenty of time to learn the rules. I find it helpful to bring a little "cheat sheet" with all of the USRs and other rules I'm likely to need written on it (with page numbers written down too, in case of disputes). Make sure that you read up on your army FAQs and the Rulebook FAQs as well so you don't have any unpleasent surprises in the middle of a game.
