so I have a question does the army need to aroung 2000 points to have a lord character in it now or can you have lord characters in like 1000 point armies now?

It's % based. If you got a lord that can fit under the max, you can take them at super low points.

thanks I was just curious I have a few of the older rule books and they said 2000 points got the lords this clears up a lot for me

Like Duke said, it's no longer a number of choices per type.

In a 2000pt. list, you can spend up to 500 points on Lord choices (or 250 in a 1000pt. list).

You get 25% for Lords, 25% for Heroes, 50% for Special, and 25% for Rare. You also have to have a minimum 25% of Core.

Dark Eldar could potentially enslave the galaxy.
Necrons could potentially destroy everything.
Chaos could potentially slaughter everyone.
Tyranids could potentially eat everyone.

Tau could potentially raise prices on import good from the Eastern Fringe.

Worth noting that the % is of what you SPEND not of what you Re ALLOWED. So if your points total spent is 1996 for a 2000 point battle, you could only have 499 points of Lord.

Isn't this a bit nitpicking? Does anyone actually try to argue this point?

Yeah, I've never heard that. Browsing the BRB I think it could go both ways. You can spend 25% of "your points." You're assuming that your points is the total you intend to spend as opposed to your points being the total you're allowed to spend. Unless there's some line or FAQ I didn't see.

I think the biggest concern is staying under the limits.

I agree that it is not picking but I guess that is the kind of friends I play with. Also interested by the other interpretation. I'll probably argue that next time...

FWiW, I have never, ever seen any person ever play that it is only what you spend, because the whole section is considered by points limit not points spent

Well, RAW is totally vague. But, RAI is pretty obviously % of the points limit.

If your friends really want to say you have to drop something on your lord because you're 4 points shy in a 2000 point list, you should tell them they're dicks.

BRB pg 134. At the Top, With the points total agree, players need to pick their forces using the army lists in the relevant .. Army book, and the system presented here. Then under Lords it states you can spend up to 25% of your points on Lords.

If you agree to 2000 points, you have 500pts on in Lords even if you only play 1500 pts in a 2000 pt game.

Artee, that's ambiguous RAW. It says 25% "of your points", not "of the points total". I'm totally with you that RAI is of the points total, but it's not written clearly.

I am pretty sure that "your points" is the 2000 points you have, even if you spend 1996 of them you STILL have 2000 points, just 4 of them is unused.

whenever its "total points" or "your points" is the same thing, because you HAVE 2000 points to spend, and they are "yours" after all.

Yes, Artee, that's a clear and concise summary that cannot possibly be argued.

I also agree and will slap my mates if they disagree. Might it be a hangover from previous editions? (I've only started playing during 8th)

I'm not saying it should be the 1996 means 499 case. I'm just saying the RAW isn't clear, and it isn't.
