Subject: Best way to deal with Wraiths?
|

I have a tournament match coming up in the next week or so. Ill be facing Necrons in a Scouring match, 1750, DoW deployment.
From what i am aware she will be taking at least 1 6man squad of Wraiths, maybe 2 with wipcoils.
List i will be running is:
Draigo
10x Paladins (2 psy cannons, 2 hammers, halbers/swords)
1x Solodin
2x Dreadknights (personal telporters, 1x heavy incinerator, 1x heavy psycannon, 2x greatswords)
1x Storm Raven (MM, assault cannons, hurricane bolters, psy ammo)
The Wraiths will be one of my biggest problems and targets during the game as they will also give a victory point for being fast attack. With their speed and superior combat capabilities they are more than a match for my paladins, especially with their 3++. Is there anyone experienced in dealing with Wraiths able to give some advice on the best way to deal with them given my resources?
She will also have a Monolith, something i have never gone up against before. Any tactical advice would be appreciated.

I play Necrons myself and i have faced off against GK a couple of times..
Instakilling them will be a way to go.. Force weapons? Unsaved wounds can activate them and when they do, bye multiple wound wraiths! High AP doesnt affect them as you probably know.. But str 8 and above will instakill them as well. Standing behind cover/difficult/dangerous terrain wont matter, they always pass those tests so they wont be slowed down. And when they come in to contact a lot of models in base contact will hit later (if whipcoils are taken) so their ini loss if they get it wont matter that much.. But killing them in CC MUST be your last resort, you migh and will probably win against them,.. but you will lose to much.... (their attacks are str 6 and rending)
Though,... certainly with GK,.. id try to kill them at range with volume of fire if possible... I think your StormRaven will be to late since wraiths will be in contact turn 1/2. And your StormRaven will enter on turn 2 soonest. So maybe 1 dreadknight might be able to bring some flamy, high volume death? Also look at the skills of your characters/Psychers, maybe there is something interesting there... If i remember correctly some Grey Knights are capable of unleashing some kind of defensive lightning storm?

Utlize GK's shooty/assaulty hybrid nature. Focus fire on the wraiths on their way toward you, as they will almost certainly be making a bee line toward your death star. Once you whittle them down a bit, get the charge. You will have initiative on them as well, meaning you will strike first. Activate force weapons, and goodbye Wraiths. Meanwhile, move your DK toward the Monolilth, and pound it to the ground with Smash attacks. If you have your Solodin as an objective camper, I'd make sure to keep the death star between the Wraiths and him. A smart opponent might try to take out your camper with his superior speed, before moving on to the death star. You should be good with Paladins though; even with Rending, the Wraiths can't ID your Pallies, but you can ID him. Just help yourself out by positioning yourself to get the charge for more attacks.

Even though they dont instakill Grey Knights, they wound on a 2+ which is baaaaad for the GK player.. But i must say, your advice seems solid to me.

Few ways to get rid of them:
1: Psy dreds. Should be taking 1-3 anyways since they are so darn good. Knocks off ~1 per shooting phase. Not very impressive, but with 3 and 2 rounds of shooting, thats most of a unit.
2: Dredknights. Dont bother with the sword, WAY too expensive. Just run the Heavy Incinerator as it is by far the best weapon choice. Once in melee he is still Str 10, so punch at least 1 dead per round of assault. While again, not impressive, you have to remember that a DK with HI is much cheaper than his unit. You can run at least 2 for the cost of his unit which will do quite a bit of damage at range, probably get the charge, then punch quite a few dead before going down. Remember to constantly challenge out the Dlord if he has one. Personal teleporters are overrated and overcosted imo.
3: Dakka. With paladins you have problems bringing firepower to the table. With 2 units of purifiers you put out more than 2x the firepower and those 4 psycannons will rip holes in his unit fast. Cleansing flames is also good dakka that gets around whips and cant be DTWd.
4: Get the charge. When you have halberds you are striking at I3, meaning you always strike first. With the charge you should easily have enough attacks to punch through his inv and get 5+ wounds on his wraiths. With S5 from hammerhand from drago then the force weapon from the banner, you should punch wraiths apart. Then he loses combat and is swept. Paladins lack the attacks to get through that many good invs without the charge, but grabbing another attack per model is pretty big.

As already mentioned S8 weapins for the insta kill is the way to go, or simply weight of fire from bolters or similar.
One thing to consider is that wraiths are often more scary in your mind than on the table and many good Necron players will use them as a distraction unit, allowing units with a low threat perception to creep up and d serious damage; scarabs being a major culprit.

1750 pts, i dont see you have enough models on the table to win,
6 wraiths is nothing, my GK army will eat through it like butter
because even at 1500pts I have 30 storm bolters, + the rest of my army,
barring that, they lose models fast to my psyflye men ect
you can take 10 guys armed with bolters over one paladin, and still have 5 pts left over,
you need more dakka man

Thanks for this, i didnt realise wraiths had such low initiative, Its a shame the lists are set otherwise i would have taken all Halberds, at the moment i have 2 hammers in the death star, 6 halberds and 2 swords, should hopefully be enough. My army does seriously lack S8 weapons (psyfuldread or 2 would have been useful) but force weapons should do the trick after i weaken them with psycannons and storm bolters. Ill try my best to avoid combat at least until the raven comes in. I may even deepstrike and combat squad the death star to keep them out of harms way for the first turn and present more targets to the enemy when they do come in. Should also help with there maneuverability.

My thoughts for the camper was to either keep him with Draigo for protection, by having draigo on the table first turn i can benifit from psychic communion in the second turn (Reserves modifier) getting my reserves on a 2+. Draigo can also eat any shots coming his way and protect him from some combat. The second option was to keep it in reserve either in the Raven, deepstrike or walking on from the board edge, still contemplating which one will be most suitable, i may not know until i see the board setup.

If anything i was thinking of keeping my dreadknights away from the wraiths, They ill strike before as the dk are only I4 with no modifiers so wipcoils will be super effective and that many rending attacks even at T6 will most likely down a DK. Flamers would be a huge help. I think keeping my force together to benefit from combined shooting will be the way to go. I usually deepstrike my Paladins but i feel i may need their shooting for the whole duration of the game to make this work. I think the lightning attack your thinking about is holocaust, a psyhic shooting attack. Its can be useful but not great with a S5 - AP large blast.

Unfortunately the lists are locked so i wont be able to make any changes. Im not a huge fan of Purifiers, my local meta and the tournament has a vast amount of chaos players spamming AP3 blast masters and drakes meaning in the grand scheme marines are far more vulnerable. Im personaly a fan of the greatswords. Although DK's are crazy powerful in CC they dont have that many attacks, only 4 basic/5 on the charge. Any 1's can take lower your attacks significantly and targets like wraiths will hot you back with a ton. I would also never take a DK without a PT, they basically fill the roll of fast attack in my army.
Thanks for the advice everyone, i think the biggest challenge will be avoiding them until i can pop off a few of their numbers, once i have done that ill take your advice and try to wreck them with force weapons.

I dunno man, iv played this list against hordes and its worked great. Its not about wiping the table its about playing strategic. I usually hold things back in reserves for as long as possible almost wasting the first turn by having nothing in line of sight on the table and the rest in reserves, wait until turn 2 or 3 then shunt the DK's where they need to be and deepstrike paladins all together. The majority of TAC armies really cant handle that much 2+5++ and with potentially only 3/4 turns of shooting left most armies dont have enough AP2 shots before i get some serious charges or really get entrenched on their objectives (ill always head for the most dangerous units once iv deepstriked) . I rarely table the opponent but thats not the only way to win. The DK's are then fast enough to get back to home objectives while the paladins really ruin their day. Thats how i like to play anyway. Often the first 1/2 turns of my game nothing much happens until i bring the whole army down in force Ambush Knights!, although im not sure this will work so well against wraiths where i will need increased dakka capacity....i admit my tactics are far from perfect

Seeing as you handle the critics, comments and ideas i think you know your army well enough to be able to stand victor! And yes, as i tried to warn you for whipcoils i gave advice for/on a model that would surely get to hit last because of Whipcoils,.. didnt think that 1 through

Thanks again, to be honest i thought wip coils superseded Halberds, so i thought that they would be striking before my paladins. Its good to know i will still at least have my Halberd attacks.
Everyone's advice was great, really helped me put things im perspective, i think i may have been over worrying about the wraith threat...not that its ever to be underestimated. I also didnt realise how much of a huge point sink they were. Hopefully if he has piled a load of points into them, he is lacking elsewhere in his army.

So wip coils reduce halberds to 1 too?
Im pretty terminators (aka paladins) cant sweep anyway...if they can, iv been playing it wrong since 6th dropped.

The more points that go anywhere but the troops slots make the necron army worry about staying power.. Destroy his warriors and or immortals, and he cant score anymore,.. unless he/she brings trazyns,... but he alone is a discussable point sink

Whip coils still reduce you to I1, even with Halberds. To get around whip coils, you make sure your hammers are the models in base contact wtih the whip coil Wraiths when you charge. They're already I1, so no penalty there. Just takes a bit more "strategery", lol.
And no, Termies can't Sweeping Advance.
