I hate to keep making new threads asking about armies, but I just want to make sure I pick something I'll enjoy for years to come. With that in mind I was looking at O&G and as much as I love my little gobbos I gotta admit I love the Savage Orc models, especially Wurzag Da Great!! I was curious if anyone had run a savage orc theme army and how it played. Even if you haven't run one, do you think it'd play ok? Mind you I'm not talking tournament play, just friendly casual games at the local store.

I used to play Orcs and Gobblins and let me just say, they are one of the funnest armies to play and play against. I played before their new 8th edition book came out, but also some with the new book.

Savage Orcs can be very good, and I also like the new models. I still have about 30 of the older metal ones. Larger units of them can be good, but smaller ones will only really be worth it on flanks, though large ones could do well also of course. Also they can be good as a first line of sorts, rush them up and hack away what you can to make way for the waaagh!

Now, I havent really played as them in a while, but I had some pretty good success when utilizing Savage Orcs.

Savage Orcs will do just fine for you. They are a staple in many, many O&G tournament lists, and even though that's not your goal, they'll be just fine in casual games too.

How much control you keep over them depends on the rest of your list. Between animosity and frenzy, they have the potential to go do their own thing. You can mitigate this with black orcs, leadership boosts, BSB, etc. Or you can just embrace it and enjoy the ride...

And I've yet to play against a Savage Orc block that didn't also have a Shaman toting around the shrunken head...

“It was in lands of the Chi-An where she finally ran him to ground. There she kissed him deeply as he lay dying, and so stole from him his last, agonized breath.

On a delicate chain at her throat, she keeps it with her to this day.”

They're a pretty solid combat, mainly hampered by not having re-rolls. There are a couple of things they need to be good though:

1. Shaman with Shrunken Head, who is often carrying the Fencer's Blades for protection.

2. A Black Orc of some description, so that a single failed animosity roll doesn't cost you the game. He also often carries the Stubborn Crown, so that a single failed frenzy roll doesn't have you running off and exposing your flank.

3. Magic resistance 2/3, so that you can cast the boosted Foot of Gork without having to worry too much about rolling the result where it will come down (which will be on the Savages) because you'll have a 2++ or 3++ against it.

4. They also really benefit from being in general and BSB range for those frenzy tests.

So, pretty much like any other part of a successful O&G army- they need Black Orcs to limit animosity, and both ld bubbles to get round frenzy.

How does this get them to 2++ or 3++? Magic resistance doesn't stack with other wards.

I'm pretty sure it does, thats what makes MR very good on ward save units

MR does in fact stack with ward. So khorne daemons aren't hurt by magic missiles very often.

Wow, so it does - I've been short changing myself since I started playing. Very glad I made that erroneous comment now

Savage Orcs are probably the most commonly seen unit in the book right now. Units of 30-40, upgraded to Big 'Uns, with extra hand weapons, are seriously dangerous.
A shaman with the Shrunken Head is basically mandatory, with Fencer's Blades, if he has room.

I've also seen units of 18 with Big Stabbas and liberal uses of the Hand of Gork (or is it Mork?) and 'Ere We Go.
If you field some chariots and pump wagons, you've got a fine Impact Hit army in the making.
