can a 10 man tac squad combat squad down and deploy 5 in a drop pod and the other 5 separately either starting on the board or walking on from reserves? The only thing I can find in the latest FAQ is something about picking which models go in each squad first then each 5 man squad counts as a separate unit, so I can't see why they couldn't deploy separately?

yes, yes you can. once combat squadded (prior to deployment) they are separate units for all rules purposes for the rest of the game.

I believe you can. The FAQ says "You must decide which units are splitting into combat squads, and which models go into each combat squad, immediatetly before deployment." They changed it from 'before their deployment.' Once you have choosen combat squads you can deploy them seperatly, they count as two completely different units.
You have to choose all combat squads before any of your models are deployed.

I believe you can even deploy two combat squads in the same drop pod.

You get the added bonus of deciding if you wish to combat squad upon the pods landing. But that means all 10 are in there on deployment.

Not how it reads in the FAQ, ? Separate units as long as you pick the models for each half before deployment? So surely they can deploy separately too Automatically Appended Next Post: Can anyone else confirm If I'm on the right track or not?

Prior to Deployment you nominate whether or not a given squad is combat squadding. After that they are two different units in all respects, with the allowance to both be embarked in the same vehicle. This means (for example) a 10-man Tac squad with Drop Pod can split before deployment and either one, both or neither squad starts in the DP with the other (if any) either in reserves or deployed on the table.

In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

My question here is do both halves of the combat squad get tank hunter from Cato? His rules say "1 tactical squad" but doesn't say anything about whether half the squad loses the ability when they separate.
I thought to take Cato with a tac squad with melta/combi melta, and lascannon and have the metla have pod in for a tank pop while the lascannon half manned an aegis gun. I wasn't sure if they'd both benefit from tank hunter though so I didn't do it.

IMHO it is chosen which Tac squad has the special rule when building your army (hence the "at no extra cost"). As such, the whole unit has the special rule, and would maintain it even if squaded.

Yer I thought it was a free add on for the whole squad before they combat squadded down too. So the general consensus is that I have read it right? I know it's not amazingly written and will have to try and explain it again and again in the future but I don't mind and will dice for it if the opponent wants be too. Does anyone strongly disagree with any proof?

Like I said the key wording is they get one of the listed abilities "at no extra cost." The only time the cost of something is when building your list. If it was meant to be chosen during deployment it would specify that.

Yer I agree thanks, I just want to be as close to 100% sure as I can.
Does anyone disagree with either the drop pod combat squading or the Cato sicarius rule? Can they give rules to state otherwise? .... I hope not but still?

Nope. You've got it right.
Goat was confused and thinking of the old 5th ed rules for Pods and for Combat Squads, which allowed you to decide whether to split on arrival, and specifically forbade splitting into Combat Squads while in Reserve. 6th ed reversed that, requiring all Combat Squads decisions to be made in the Deployment phase of the game, and now allowing two Combat Squads to ride in a transport at the same time despite being two separate units.
