Looking for some opinions on a few ideas
I have been building a SW army and wanted to add an Allied Detachment (excuse to paint more models! Lol). I'm gonna get some IG but I was also thinking of normal marines to use sometimes because I like the look of their flyer and I like the ironclad dread model.
Anyway... I ended up getting Dark vengeance as I needed 6th Ed rules anyway and figured I'd just get the set and have the models as a bonus.

I'm not totally sold on the DAs, lovely models but not sure what I make of the fluff and the green armour just doesn't rock my world, plus they don't get full battle brothers alliance with my SWs.

So could I just paint them how I want and run them as Vanilla marines or would that just look to weird because of all the DA markings etc? It all reminds me of Roman soldiers so I thought I could call them something like "the Preatoreans" and palm them off as normal marines that way.
(I don't wanna go carving off all the DA stuff BTW, models are to to pretty for that I think)

Failing that if I just run them as DAs would it maybe look odd painting them something other than green? Call it a successor chapter or something. Death and raven wing colours are fine its just the green I'm not to in love with.

DA Successor Chapter? Different options there and the symbols will fit.

Well, I've chosen a DA successor chapter, Guardians of the Covenant. Their color pattern is rather dark.

If you play DA with C:SM, you're a HERETIC!

Really, though, people were doing that forever, and I doubt many people will complain about it. If you're really worried, a dremel, some glue, and a bunch of plain shoulder pads can make DV work for just about any chapter.

I would be fine with it.

Although, you CAN do an entire DA army and not paint much green if any

OK so it seems people wouldn't really get all uptight about DA painted in different colours, but what about models with all the DA markings left on being played as normal SM? Yay or nay?

Go for it.

Just paint them in the color you like and tell anyone that asks that you like the winged sword symbol so much that you wanted to use it for your personal Chapter. As long as you aren't using specific DA-only wargear equipped models as regular Space marines (like the bikes or the special Terminators), it's perfectly fine to count a DA tactical marine as a vanilla Tactical marine.

If you like the imagery of the DA models, but aren't forced to use the ones with Chapter Badged molded on their armor, just add your own transfers to taste. In fact, turning the winged sword of the DA upside down makes a really cool looking "sword in front of a stylized sunray" icon.

There are some people on here that will give you grief for the thought if it, but they'll end up using semantics to argue their point about how you are somehow trying to use models as they aren't meant to be used. Ignore them.

It comes down to the fact that you can do what you want as long as it follows to rules of the game so as to be fair to others.

I've been running my army as both DA and C:SM since 3rd. They are painted DA green (Caliban green now) with white shoulder pads and the interior of their helmets white. I paint my bikers and terminators green also, because I'm not a fan of the bone white termies, and black seemed a little boring to me, plus I love the green colour. I've never had any complaints, in fact I've had a few compliments (which is weird because I don't consider myself a good painter).

My point... a rose by any other name, is a marine... er something like that. As long as war gear is the same (barring counts as of course) and they are in power armor, I don's see anyone having an issue. If you go as far as to make up your own fluff (I have a rather large background done up for mine), even better. Remember one of the most important rules, the rule of cool. And, you know, it's your army so go nuts and have fun yada yada...
