It's my birthday next week and my better half has got me Dust tactics. I know nothing about it other than the back story and fluff (which is what perked my interest to begin with) but I'm wondering if there are any players on here and if so could you tell me which is better to get into Dust Tactics, or warfare? I play 40k and fantasy but as far as I can tell it's very different

Both are interchangable i believe? The game boards the boxed set come with are pretty much all you need for that, the game units are the same. I think tactics is more for the "boardgame" players while warfare is geared towards "Wargamers" in terms of play.

Yeah I thought so. It's just there's such a wealth of expansion packs and other stuff to take in I was/am a little daunted

No worse so than a lot of games really. Look at the x-wing game for one thats getting that way. A lot of "oh, so i need to buy these too?" for something a lot of folk would pick up thinking its just a boardgame. (though il admit dust is still miles ahead, though alot of the expansions are closer to campaign books rather than "buy this to continue playing and getting full enjoyment"

Greetings,

What did she give you exactly?

I think starting with Dust Tactics is good, because the investment to play both is minimal. Thus, if she picked up for you the Revised Core Set with the rules, for example, you'd probably just want to get the Terrain Tiles (essential, the papery maps just don't cut it and they really are quite nice) and then expand from there.

The Board Game Geek Dust Tactics (or, alternately, Warfare) forums have tons of threads about what to expand with, buy later, etc.

So, I digress. Tactics is like bloody, brutal chess. it really requires you to think a few ticks ahead of the clock, use your abilities wisely, and count on a little lady luck.
It's fast, fun and very scenario driven. You must use scenarios and missions to stay within the spirit of the game.
It is an ideal way to learn the basics of Dust stat lines, shooting, weapon familiarity and ability concepts.

Some of that changes in Dust Warfare, however. This game is a natural progression to a more realistic and in depth type of conflict, and when I play it around 40K gamers they often either want to try or stare longingly as we finish a highly strategic large match in about two hours tops.
Warfare is command and platoon driven, and also heavily scenario based, and their ingenious Battle Builder approach which allows for fast but player -driven scenario creation is simply fantastic.

We like both games, however.
If she got you the core set, I'd pick up:

The Terrain Tiles for Tactics, followed by more units that you are keen on and then, when you cannot resist any longer,
grab the Warfare core rule book.
Play tactics first, then start envisioning taking over a large game board with the free measure system and far more detail and depth.

Both rock -- my girlfriend, her best female friend, and many of my game group love Tactics.

Warfare is a more thorough sell -- and it must be pushed by someone familiar with the rules -- but one taste of it recently and now my entire game group is coming over next Friday for a full on significant 2 on 2 demo game.
It is faster, more engaging, more interesting and far far more balanced than most wargames on the market.
It has it's flaws, and some don't like it, but we are eating up both at the moment.
Chow down.

I play tactics all the time. I love the game. It is very easy to learn and like you have said a very interesting fluff behind the game. I have been reading the warfare book and you can use the same models and cards for it. Allthough they work a bit differently in that game as with tactics. Each expansion is designed as a campaign. Though they all seem to be one sided. I have yet to play in a tourney with it or anything. I am not much for the tourney scene. I think you will be happy with the game and the models.

What faction did you get? I personally like the SSU, but have started geting the Axis as well. There is supposed to be a forth faction coming out soon some time. Its the aliens basically.

Anywasy good luck with Dust I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

Thank you so much dude - your post really ticked all my boxes on all scores to be honest Thanks for taking the time...

Yeah she got me the revised core today, happy birthday to me - stunning minis in the game! Got to say right off the bat, for plastic they might be the best I've seen and I've been a miniatures fiend since 1990. You're totally right about the boards as well - looking at the poster sheets included in the revised edition they're going to look like a dog has got hold of them after a few months of weekly play at our game nights...Very flimsy. I'll hunt down the larger tiles asap

I've also been on eby checking out the other units to add and there's a wealth of weird and wonderful things out there - especially axis! Zombies, gorilla's, massive heavy walker tank thigs Cracking stuff.

Will see how I get on with a bunch of plays and see what I think of it before tackling warfare (as you also suggested)

I'm real excited, hope there's some serious depth of play to be discovered and enjoyed!
