Hi Dakkians,

So I've just finished a termagant for my hive fleet kraken and could use a little critique. I used the GW painting books ideas for each stage of painting however I added one where there is a more liberal application of screaming skull since it looks like in their photos that they did so on each of their models. I think the base came out well considering but I would like to know if I'm missing anything or anything can be improved. This is the second topic on painting my nids, the other was a ripper I worked on to get the scheme and mostly the base ready here: http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/513510.page, as an update to that one, I tried the orange glaze for the lava and it kinda ruined the yellows of the lava so I think I might just have to settle with what I got.

Without further wait, here we are:

Thanks again for the critique!

Oh believe me... I know... But, I play Black Templar and they are pretty much all done so I don't have to rush the paint to play or anything. I'm in no rush to do my nids, I vowed to do them slowly, make sure I take time with each nid. I want it to be one of those armies that I put on the table and someone says wow those look nice together, not just ok they look tabletop standard nothing more.

If that's the case, I would spend more time on the armour and give it a streaky look like the ones in my gallery. It looks good, but I regret doing it because it takes me too damned long to paint a whole army, lol. Also you could give the skin a subtle highlight which will make it look a bit neater and have a bit more contrast. But those recommendations are if you want to spend ages painting something that stands out more, not what I'd recommend if you simply want to get them on the table (especially with nids where you have tons of the buggers to paint)

Ya steaks were mentioned, I'm just not sure how to do it, is it like a fat line that gets skinnier out or? Is this line in the same highlight color as the carapace highlight? Also, what would you highlight the skin with, currently the skins Screaming Skull.

If you want to do streaks like mine, it's pretty simple, but time consuming. If we zoom in on one of my models, you can see how I did it...

It was done as a two stage highlight, first painting the armour dark blue, then a medium blue...

Then a light blue...

You can do the same with dark red, medium red, then a brighter orangish red.

To do the streaks, it helps a LOT to have a good quality brush with a good tip. Start at the tip of the streak and create the point using the tip of the brush, then as you go down the streak press the brush more in to the model so that the streak becomes fatter near the base. I purposely didn't do my light blue streaks directly over the dark blue ones because it gives it a more random and rough look. One thing people often get wrong (when I've looked at other peoples' nids) is they do too many streaks and paint them too short/small, and then their lighter colour streaks aren't long enough. The light streaks as you can see on my Tyrant are still quite long, they're just narrower than the darker streaks. Gives the model a bit more depth.

But yes, very time consuming I regret doing it because it takes me so long to do, even the small amount of armour on a hormagaunt takes me 30 minutes and the armour on something larger like a Ravener takes an hour or two.

That Tyrant you can tell was a rush job because half the streaks aren't straight, I was getting sick of painting them so went faster and became less neat. If you look at my Carnifex or Trygon they have much straighter and nicer looking streaks because I spent much more time on them than I did the Tyrant.
