I was going to frame this in a binary manner, but I figured that there is a little more diversity wouldn't hurt.
So, in your games, what do you prefer? To play alone and have complete control, to work together, or perhaps compete against multiple players?
I prefer singleplayer games over multiplayer for a variety of reasons.
1) Singleplayer games have better stories
It is only natural, the main campaign is the selling point of the game. ME3's selling point was in all likelihood its story and status as a sequel, but multiplayer is probably going to extend its life quite a bit.
2) You have complete control
Nothing is more jarring to a RP experience than a naked train of Orcs running through one shotting everything in sight while spamming racist insults. Luckily you can avoid such unpleasantries by not participating in RPing in MMORPGs and instead stick to classic offline RPGs.
3) Modding
There are quite a few mods for FPS and RTS games that I know of, but they pale in comparison to the overhauls and additional content for games such as NWN and TES series where the developers actually provided players with the tools to create their own adventures.
4) Avoiding the gaming community
No community is perfect, but the gaming community is particularly notorious for being vulgar, sexist, racist, cheating, dishonest, disloyal, and just generally unpleasent. Its great fun to be grouped with other skilled players in a given game and 'pwning baddies', but that quickly becomes repetitive. The lack of moderation and anonymity has created a very putrid culture, that I don't care much for. That's not to say every gamer is a pompous jerk, but there are quite a few...and even the "nice" ones are far too quick to bite at first.
5) No grinding, minimal repitition
The absolute worst aspect of MMORPGs is the level grind through a lot of content you either don't care about or have done before. Only the worst RPGs have level after level of mundane content and, on a PC at least, you have the ability to cheat through or skip such content.

I prefer CO-OP as
1. It makes you not only play co-op it makes you think co-op (such as puzzle games like portal 2)
2.It bonds friendships in co-op fighting/shooting games (such as deadspace 3 co-op)
3.It gains trust with other players...space marine exterminatus is a good example of this.

Singleplayer. I find it to be a much more satisfying experiance than the other 3. Oh, and not having to rely on an internet connection is a nice touch.
I miss those days...

You mean backstab friends?
Co- op is probably the most frustrating game mode for me. I easily get frustrated when people can't keep up.
I prefer good ol' multiplayer, heads need shooting, bases need belonging, ears need new owners.

I enjoy co op as a way to just chill out with friends, i love playing COH with a few friends against the computer. L4D is another good laugh with just a few friends.
Even on things like battlefield i might be on a huge server but will be in a team with a few friends or clan mates on team speak.
But ultimately as a major RPG man i prefer single player as i tend to find co op or MMORPG games lack the depth of story i want, that and having others involved would interfere with my immersion into the story.

For me it really depends on the game. FPS/TPS I like having a co-op and multi-player option to extend the life of the game after the campaign. For RPGs I prefer those as single player.

I like single player a lot but I love co-op. Some of my fondest game memories are me and my friends connecting to a game and just wailing on the poor AI until we've had our fill. Preferably with friendly fire on because that will always lead to something hilarious.

Co-op.
I only play with people on my friendslist anyways and it's always fun trying to beat games on the hardest mode with a buddy.

Actually, the harem is the exception to this, because when we play at least one of us is drunk.

The exception to co- op sucking? Hell yes it is.
