It may be daft but the crux of the issue I'm having is can you fire Gauss weaponry at a tank even though it doesnt have the strength in the first place to penetrate its armour?
I've played a few games and to me it's a case of, if you don't have a strong enough weapon to force an Armour Penetration roll then you shouldn't roll for AP, whereas the Necron Codex states that Gauss Weaponry inflicts a glancing hit on a roll of a six on AP rolls. Basically a strength 4 weapon with Gauss can kill a Land Raider effectively by rolling 6's even though to my mind you should only be rolling for AP against a Land Raider if you have a weapon strong enough to at least equal the armour value; I.e 8 or more.
So should a Necron Gauss weapon get an AP roll even if the strength wouldn't be enough to harm a tank in the first place?

I can see what you're getting at but by the same token, I can't imagine any reason why GW would include this rule on Gauss if that's not how it was meant to be played.

Yes you can. You can always fire a weapon at something you can't hurt, just normally it's pointless. WIth gauss however, it is NOT pointless because you CAN hurt it regardless of strength.

You answered your own question. Can Gauss weapons on a roll of 6 glance any AV? Yes. Can they subtract hull points from any vehicle then? Yes.

Yes, there is nothing preventing you from selecting a target that the normal strength of the weapon cannot effect. As noted already the gauss USR would be fairly useless if there 'was' such a rule, since it's only current purpose is to automatically glance a vehicle when a six is rolled on the penetration di(c)e.

I'd suggest visiting the tactics board and posting some of your army specifics; there are lots of folk there who'd be happy to give you some tips on combatting the mechanical menace.

It's a great tactic drop 20 dude via deep strike within 12 inches having already given them tank hunter from zhandrak (sp) and not only do you get to glance on 6's for every non 6 you get to reroll it. Lol watch the land raider cry.

Same goes for Haywire grenades. The "standard" type have S2 in the BRB - if you couldn't attack a vehicle with them the Haywire rule would be totally pointless.

They should put out a reprint though, at the least. Add in the AP values of melee weapons, remove deep strike from vehicles, maybe clear up some of the clunky rules that people seem to still have issues understanding (I'm looking at you, royal courts).

Hey, *I* understand the royal court rules. I was always flabbergasted by the amount of people that didn't understand it. But, I can also see why they would have been confused, pre- FAQ. I'm simply saying a reprint codex with the FAQ answers integrated into the actual codex (and not just as an addendum FAQ section) would be great, but it won't happen.

Yarp. The only difference has been how glances have been handled in the core rules from edition to edition.
