Hi everyone, obviously best place to first post.

I used to be into 40k when I was younger, more the modelling and painting to be honest, I had a blood angels army (hell knows where that ended up!) and only played them with friends, went into games workshop one time for an event and immediately got told my assault squad couldn't have two chain swords or dual weild pistols by another guy there and pointed out what was wrong with my army... Awesome welcome lol but that kind of put me off. but recently had the painters twitch so am trying to get back into it, the modelling and painting side atleast. I've got some grey knight terminators and a few other bits randomly bought from anvil industries (cannot recommend enough) and bitzbox for some conversions. Pretty much had in mind to make a kind of diorama of the terminators fighting a horde of Tyranids, but changed my mind and now think they'd be better fighting chaos space marines.

I'm not going to pretend I know what I'm doing, or any of the fluff or background of 40k and don't want to do anything that will offend anyone. Registered as I'm going to have a ton of questions at some point so will get it done now rather than later. Had an interest of making a background for them but they'll be all terminators and was thinking a missing legion (recently read that's a no no) so any ideas would be welcome.

Your idea with the Termies sounds pretty cool. Would love to see pictures of your WIP.
In regards to your fluff question, I recommend doing some research on the 40k lore threads on this site, or going to lexicanum.com for more lore and background.
In regards to making your own Legion or Chapter, it really is totally up to you. Like with Vanilla Marines, you can come up with your own Chapter and use the SM Codex rules.

Hey, thanks for the warm welcome, all that info is appreciated. I've read a few things about the lore. Read a bit about the Horus Heresy and the primarch's etc but there's no easy me quick way of learning it lol I've gotta get a desk for properly getting on them, so far I've only semi converted the poses of the figures, in doing so sliced my thumbs and fingers all over the place so really need to invest in that as its all stalled until then!

Is there any specific parts you can recommend me reading up on?

you have a decent idea and i think you should "totally" do it, i eagerly await WIP shots below are x2 places to start you off with

here is a good place to start as any may sound obvious but many new guys forget to check GW's website: http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/home.jsp click 40k, then on the side bar look at space marines. another good place to look is (also fairly obvious) https://www.google.com and search for "Space Marine Terminator Diorama" for idea's. anything else i'd need pictures or it needs a more in depth description of what you want in the "rama" and how you want it to look in respects to theme etc. but the latter part of this "reply" is only for after you have exhausted the weblinks provided
