Are they even worth keeping anymore??

Every necron player I know has told me that Monoliths are pretty much useless now thanks to Hull-points and a few other rules that I can't remember off the top of my head (one being the large price tag not being worth it).

So yeah, the only real purpose they serve now is to be a centerpiece for display

EDIT: I remember now. It suffers a similar problem as the Leman Russ did. It has an ordnance weapon (the Particle Whip) so the rest of it's guns can only make snap-shots. Another problem being it's competition in the HS slot being better

They're still viable.

They got cheaper and didn't lose any fire power. Yes they are easier to kill, but did anyone really expect them to keep all their insane durability?

Its fairly cheap AV14 with some impressive guns and teliportation options. Pretty decent for the points.

Pros

Monoliths are the cheapest Av14 on all sides, in the game.
The have an unlimited teleporting ability and can eat enemy that are 6'' range.
S8 Ap 3 Large Blast that can't be removed with a weapon destroyed result.
4 Gauss Flayers Arrays that can fire at different units.
Huge LOS blocking model
Can Deep strike
Isn't wreaked on immobilesed result
4 Hull Points
Only tank that isn't Open Topped

Cons

SLOW
Competes with the Annihilation Barge
Can only move 6 and can't jink
Not longer immune to Lance/Melta/Haywire
Getting a cover save is difficult
Fire Magnet
Units can't assault from existing the portal
Expensive $$$ wise
A pain to carry to the club
24'' weapons

I own a Monolith and the times I have used it are few but it has never been destroyed,. Av14 is really good in 6th Edition the dice have to be good for it to be popped by a LC & is immune to S7 spam .

The main problem I have with it is that its slow, Necrons are the current king of the Blitzkrieg army style and Monolith can't keep up.

Monolith's are great, for basically plonking in an area of the board and saying "This 24 inch bubble? Mine now.

Very few things will go near it, meaning it won't kill much. But that's not why it's good, it's good because you can bottleneck your enemy into a small space, or else they have to risk getting shot up by the monolith

Made better by the fact that most stuff that kills monoliths easily would have to come within that 24" bubble to hurt it.

Railguns and Lances are about the only thing that could reliably threaten a Monolith safely. Or a speeder with a Multi-melta.

I have one in a list I'm playing with tonight. The important bits are I've got 4 Night scythes with warriors and a D&D unit that is deepstriking. If a NS gets shot down, I should be able to bring the contents through the portal next turn, instead of being forced to walk them on from my table edge. Likewise, I can redirect the D&D squad through the portal if I really need to. Dunno how well it will play out, but we'll find out tonight

Ive used one a fair few times times in the New Dex. It usually either died from the First Lascannon that hit it or killed half of my opponants army.

I havent used one seriously (as in outside of calm games) in 6th Yet, so I cant really elaborate...

Monoliths are just overshadowed by every other unit in the heavy support slot.

So, they aren't bad, just all the other options are better.

Wow. A lot of great advice in there. Thanks all. I would say that keeping them is the smart choice.

This. Annihilation Barges are ridiculously efficient.

UPDATE!!!

Played 1500 Necrons today against Dark Eldar and thought, "I should give those monoliths a shot." Here's basically what happened. Absorbed about 3 dark lances then exploded. On turn 1. Yay!

So. Cal. (IE)

I've played (and watched) our Necron player in several games recently and he runs one (and sometimes two) Monoliths and so far the results have been dreadful. He's tried Deep Striking them with disastrous results, once he lost one to a mishap, he's had them scatter and go back into reserve for 2+ turns, he's also dropped two (yes, 2!) against my DW and gotten them exactly where he wanted them only to kill nothing and promptly lose both the following round to my Hammernators. He's deployed them on the field and they've acted as nothing more than roadblocks for his army while destroying not much of anything. I am willing to chalk all that up to his inexperience and decision making, still it's hard to see the value in them. They are woefully slow in an army that's highly mobile (or can be) and their weapons aren't worth much of anything given their short range on such a slow platform. The Teleport function is nice, but not worth the cost of the Monolith and while Deep Striking does grant it a fair degree of mobility, Deep Striking such a large model is almost never worth it because of the hazard involved.

I think the question has to be who are you likely to play and what is the role of the Monolith in my army.

People seem to rarely break the armies into roles, but I think it is paramount.

Another huge mistake I see all the time. People are planning what to do on their turn with no thought for the enemy. You will only be reacting then. Try to look at their army and see what their plan is.

If I had a monolith in my list vs dark eldar I would keep it in cover or reserve. Dark Lances are too good vs Monoliths. I would only bring it if I was ready for a full on offensive.

This!!!!^^^^ A million times this!!! I never play as necrons but they are my cousins favorite army and the mono and lychguard are 2 units he ALWAYS brings. I usally play tau and the monolith dies the turn it shows up every time. Usually the second twin linked broadside shot and an explodes result. The one time i tried nids against his crons my squad of 3 zoeys all penetrated and all 3 rolled sixes. We both died a little while laughing because it was such a shock.

I will admit that when they dont get obliterated they can be devastating. My broadsides got scared of a doomscythe before they had a chance to see the monolith and it literally cost me the game because they never got another shot at it and it has a great time blasting away at my troops.

Tyranids will consume the universe!!! There is no chance for survival!!
.........eventually anyways.........

They are to risky to field in most cases. Sad, I loved the look of terror in my opponents when they saw the Monolith. Now, they are like, Phew!

It is really only designed for anti hoarde, or something like Purifier Spam

and while yes, mine usually dies ,it usually only does so to most of my opponants army (save my friend who killed it before it moved with a single TL Lasconnon....)
