Hey guys,

Really really tempted to get into FoW I like my WW2 films and computer games (things like company of heros etc) plus a lot of my family members served during the war.

I am interested in starting a British and German force. My plan is to have a very mobile German force hard hitting being quite armour heavy. Then a British force with a lot of Royal Artillery support plus the odd RAF fighter-bomber .

Just wondered what a good starting point was? I am thinking of picking up a copy of Open Fire! and going from there.

Open fire is more geared towards late war. Non of the miniatures in the set would be any good for Early/Mid war.

If you have your heart set on Early War you can pick up one of the mini rulesbooks on Ebay for about a fiver. Which book to go for depends on whether you go for early or mid war.

"And if we've learnt anything over the past 1000 mile retreat it's that Russian agriculture is in dire need of mechanisation!"

Would Open Fire! still be a good purchase to get some games in etc?

Or is it possible to get 2 reasonable sized forces plus book for a similar price?

Kinda used to GW's pricing were £50 - £60 will get you a carrier bag lol.

A decent portion of the stuff in the box would actually work fine for MW. Most of it wouldn't work for EW though.

The StuGs would work fine for MW. I'm not sure about the Shermans, which version is in the Open Fire set? The Firefly is LW only, at least.

The German infantry would work, except for the Panzerfaust or Panzerschreck figures. The PaK40s are fine for MW as well.

The Paratroopers would work for MW Italy.

I'm getting a buddy into Flames of War and I steered him towards the starter box. It really is a good deal. You get the rulebook, 2 sets of dice, terrain, German Grenadiers, which can be used on any front, StuGs which can be in any front (MW and LW), American Paratroopers (mid war/late 2 fronts). The shermans you can use w/ USA, British, and Russian forces. You could possibly pass the paratroopers off as British Commandos too.

I'm planning on cutting his teeth doing the Infantry Ace Campaign thats In the Cassino book. The battles are small like 500-750, mainly infantry. Its a good start, and from there we'll do the North Africa book, Burning Empires, and Hell and Back. So the whole Mediterranean front is covered.

Sounds real good!

Right just been browsing the store and think Mid War is for me as I have a soft spot for the Churchill lol.

What book would I need to get to have the rules for the Brits? I guess the one in the starter box just covers those units in said box? Or is the rule books more scenario/unit rules based.

As said I am only really familier with GW's way of doing things such as core rule book and then a book for each army.

I would like to get some units with the open fire set like Churchills, Royal Artiiary Battery and perhaps a Panzer IV platoon but don't want to get a load of stuff that I have no rules for.

Cheers

Just to point out , you can get 15mm WWII stuff from other companies not just BF.

The Plastic Soldier Company, do 5 plastic Tanks for £18.5.(Pnz IV, Sherman , and stock some early war Zevda stuff.)
And they do 'company and army deals' that er even better value!

Forged In Battle do a nice range of infantry , and resin vehicles (the vehicles have intergral bases though.)

I like the desert war... If you go with british crusaders, you have a force that can easily be considered A13 or A10. 25 pdrs that can be 18/25 pdrs...

Don't know if it is still current but Desert Fox covers all of Africa plus Sicily operations...

If you have the $$, I think you can almost afford 2 crusader companies for 2000 points. LOL.

I know I liked the Aufklarungs option out of that book. Lots or anti-tank guns, good infantry and of course Panzers can be attached.

Desert Fox is still legal but it's a pretty old book. The book to get for someone starting now would be North Africa (which also covers forces in Italy and Sicily).

This might be a silly question but how do you create an account? I have followed the instructions and it then puts me back to the home page. When I try and log in it just says my password isn't right.
