Since there is no official picture of them, do you think it would be allowed if I put the chaos icon on the back of a chaos termie like the new Deathwing banners, freeing up his arms for weapons, or is that too big a model-for-advantage???

That would be fine. Icons have no rule saying they take up a hand or anything.

It would stand to reason that big guys like termies would have their icons mounted on their backs, or incorporated into a weapon.

I haven't actually ever put an Icon on any of my models =/

I mean, I pay for it in my unit upgrades, but usually I just tell my opponents that my Champion has the Icon.

On a side note, I don't like how the Icon is payed for in bulk by the unit, and not payed for per model much like their "Mark" counterparts =/

It's rather detrimental to have to either custom build a standard (If you don't have any readily available through your spare parts bin) And It always seemed silly to me, even fluff wise, to see a soldier running around with a flag, who can magically still shoot you XD Though I know a lot of players who simply use bits to designate certain models.

Standards can look awesome; comes down to how you choose to model it, and what looks good to you. Back banners/icons can work great.
