Hey all

I play Codex Space Marines: Ultramarines.
However, I have a friend of mine that is quite the power gamer and he fields an Imperial Guard Army. I say he's a power gamer because I never seem to learn more about the game each time we play. Every game, not saying a word just starts rolling dice and telling me how many men of mine die. I don't know how the imperial guard are setup but I'm thinking that he may be mistaken on some of his protocols. Can anyone help me get some "slam dunk" ideas for fighting against the imperial guardsmen?

The last list I used had:

Chapter Master
3x Tactical 10man squads
1x assault marine 10man squad
1x 10man sternguard in drop pod

I was told to take Devastators and more Close Combat choices.

I feel that a 10man terminator assault squadron with TH/SS's in a standardized land raider with lascannon sponsons would do a good trick or two on the battlefield. Also, I have concerns for whether to choose Missile Launchers or Lascannons. I feel that the Missiles I can shoot have significantly less output in results because of the 14 front armor value of the Leman Russ tanks. Also, my friend likes to field a Vendetta... even when he's "taking it easy on me."

More of a tactics question than a rules question. Wrong forum I'm afraid.
Also you can't fit 10 terminators in a LandRaider. Each terminator takes up two spaces.

Sounds like he's really not interested in helping you improve your game, and just prefers to curbstomp folks. It kinda sounds like he may be gaming you a bit in that he's not taking much time to explain his army to you. I find that people like this often get their own rules VERY wrong. But seeing as I don't know the guy I can only really comment on how to beat IG

IG is a really diverse army with a ton of great builds. As a veteran IG player I know how I get beat. Two Words: Close Combat. you can even pump it up to 4 words if you add Thunderfire Cannon. While the latter is more or less surviveable depending on your terrain situation. TH/SS terminators give me problems when they close the distance. However mind out for massed lasguns, they will pick apart your TH/SS squads on the approach. What kind of units is he running against you. Devastators will help but don't overspend on them.

But apart from army comp, I also really advise playing with the terrain set-up rules in the book. They in all honesty really do help you create good terrain situations for yourself, typically you can give yourself an avenue of approach that you have to force him to defend. IG is almost always playing defensively so keep the mission in mind and grab objectives and force him to come out of hiding.

You also might consider asking him to explain his army and their special rules to you next time you play, and I would highly recommend picking up an IG codex for yourself, "Know your enemy" and all that.

Don't let your opponent just roll dice and tell you how many models to remove without explaining anything. You'll probably find yourself taking a lot fewer casualties.

There is no such thing as a hobby without politics. "Leave politics at the door" is itself a political statement, an endorsement of the status quo and an attempt to silence dissenting voices.

If you don't have flamers, see if you can proxy flamers.

This is assuming he has a lot of guardsmen. Like an assault squad with 3 flamers (Sergeant+2 others) can jump in and with a good position burn down an entire squad killing on 3+. The bolt pistols fired by the rest of the squad will enable probably the entire squad to have flamer wounds allocated. Don't forget if a flamer overlaps another flamer you count those wounds twice.

Then if that wasn't enough they can charge in.

If terminators could deep strike to a decent position to not have every IG focus on them they can charge in and cause some damage.

I am assuming massed infantry for some reason.

We need to know what he has
