I think you've just got to pull the trigger and pick one. Idk if Battletech has something like this, but Dream Pod 9 has a volunteer corp called the Pod Squad. You could get and paint up 2 starters and attempt to grow a Heavy Gear Blitz group in your community... Would be a surefire way to get people playing

I mean there have been plenty of pros and cons for each game given out in this thread. At this moment in time, there is nothing else we can really do to help you out. You're going to have to figure out some way to decide and figure out which game you want try and play...

well the main thing that would be the deciding factor is who would play with, or if any of my friends would play

Catalyst definitely has a demo team, though I have no information about it.

best bet might be to go for all the free stuff you can, and run it by your friends. You still may end up as the 'ambassador' for the game, but at least you know it's one everyone is willing to try.

I try to avoid negative comments towards Battletech. it's not a favorite game of mine, but that doesn't mean it's bad.

From a hobbyist/modeling perspective, both have a lot of options. Battletech Mechs are pretty big and (at least in some eras) commonly 'privately owned' (think a feudal knight's sword and armor) so wild paint jobs are definitely right for the game. It looks like the mechs are relatively simple casts, with lots of conversion room. Heavy Gear is similar, with the Gears being perhaps a bit more complex, and the 'big models' (Striders, tanks) being much more complex: the big Drake is something like 20 pieces before adding weapons and such.Most normal Gears are 7-9 pieces plus base. Color schemes tend towards camo or simple 'military' inspired schemes. A few subfactions break with this. The multi-part models do allow for a good bit of conversion if you're willing. Average prices are pretty close now: most single-pack Gears are in the 11-13 range, while most Mechs look to be around that point, too. However, you'll likely need more Gears for a game as most games involve 2-4 squads per side (with a 'squad' being 5 Gears, 1-2 tanks, or a bunch of infantry).

Ruleswise, I can't say much as I haven't played Battletech in well over a decade. The rules worked and were well-written. They didn't thrill me as I just didn't find the setting interesting, but that doesn't mean they're bad. Heavy gear's rules are more interesting, but I will say that they're still a lot more 'in flux' than Battletech.

In the long run, I'd prefer you to make a choice that makes you happy. Sure, I'd like to get a sale for the guys I do work for, but I'd rather go for a happy long-term customer than a quick sale that won't buy anything again.
