Ok, so I'm experimenting with oil washes to cut down time as I have 20 suits of terminator armor to paint. I've gotten the armor plating for the test model done and I added the wash over it after an initial dullcoat. This is just basic photography, so hopefully the highlighting stands out enough to be visible in this light:

Spoiler:

This is Winton brand Winsor and Newton Van Dyke Brown thinned with odorless mineral spirits. I applied the wash then used a QTip dipped in pure mineral spirits to wipe clean the flat armor plates and any spillage.

Can't make out any of the highlights you mention, but the wash seems to have worked out quite nicely.

Nice and neat. I'd go make it a bit dirtier! Get some gradients going. Technique wise though, yup looks like you nailed it.

My highlighting always ends up subtle. Never shows up without looking at it in person or specific lighting when photographing. Bleargh.

I'll take some better photos later after sealing in Dullcote again to protect the wash. Thanks for the initial feedback. The oil wash flows soooo smoothly over everything.

Just load up a synthetic brush and just touch a recess and the entire area has a wash to it suddenly. A little mineral spirits and any excess just slides off.

The wash looks well executed. Are you painting under a spotlight? Highlights disappear if you are working under a really bright light - you see everything in super detail when painting but it doesn't translate under "normal" room lighting.

I have a 40watt bulb on an armature that I can move around and twist so I can see detail. I tried to turn it so that the light was diffused as I didn't want to spend ten minutes setting up my photo box and getting my camera out. Turns out to have not worked.
