Front-line.

We all know the Imperium is splintered in different factions, you have the IG, SoB, SM...etc.

Which other armies could use their own factions, both army list wise and fluff wise.

Could the Necrons be split? Orks and Chaos Orks (like in Fantasy.)

Post some of yours.

Glory to the first man that dies!

The Orks could easily be split into seven factions

One for each Klan and one for Freebootas and oddboyz.

The Eldar could split by Craftworld.

Daemons could split by god.

I prefer them way they are though.

The Viletide: Daemons of Nurgle/Deathguard: 7400 pts
Disclples of the Dragon - Ad Mech - about 2000 pts
GSC - about 2000 Pts
Rhulic Mercs - um...many...
Circle Oroboros - 300 Pts or so
Menoth - 300+ pts

In the setting, only the IoM and the Tau are united at any level. Everyone else more or less fights each other and is broken up into warbands/dynasty's/craftworlds/kabals/whatever. Tyranids have a loose level of unified mission but Hive Fleets have been known to fight each other, which is canon despite how moronic a concept it is.

Does anyone actually have a page number reference for this? Because it's something I really want to read at least to see the shoehorned justification for a race like the Tyranids fighting itself.

It's like an animal biting off its own leg because it was hungry. Sure, it's not hungry anymore, but it's worse off.

It's on page 215 in the big rule book's fluff section, with the text in question appearing in the small info box in the lower corner.

The Magos Biologis of the Imperium has thus far categorized the separate forces, noting the defining characteristics that each self-sufficient Hive Fleet exhibits, the creatures it evolves and the tactics it employs during attacks. Different Hive Fleets seemingly have their own agenda and have sometimes competed with each other for food, occasionally even clashing with each other over a particularly bio-rich planet.

I think the 4th edition codex had a similar bit of fluff regarding splinter fleets occasionally competing with each other with the end result being the victor assimilating the looser into itself, but I don't have a copy to check for page number... Regardless, the section quoted above then goes on to be contradicted by the next paragraph which covers how all of the Hive Fleets are but the furthest tendrils of one far greater mass all part of the overall Hive Mind.

Way back in 2nd edition there was also fluff about why Tyranids and Genestealer Cults would fight each other

Now I'm not huge on Tyranids so my terminology with the army isn't the best ..but something about Hive nodes ...or synapses becoming defected in battle or such...and another less damaged Tyranid Fleet cleaning up the defective splinter fleet

almost the same with the genestealer cult except the patriarch would be the defective one and same with why a genestealer cult would fight tyranids...but in game terms ..even if it doesn't make sense..you're in a tournament and you're playing tyranids and come up against another tyranid army..it would suck to say ..hey we can't fight each other..let's just go assimilate some sandwiches into the collective lol

on that same topic..wish they would bring back genestealer cults with or without their own codex

Looking forward to the opening of 40k: The Musical

THIS one's easy... not everyone in a Genestealer cult may be under full control when the Tyranid fleet turns up to consume them. So yes, cults have been known to fight back against their would-be devourers, just not really to any great effect...

The only plausible explanation I can think of for Tyranids fighting each other is a lack of Hive Mind control. Say, if for some reason the Hive Mind's signal were "cut off" (although we know warp storms don't cut the mustard here) or if all Synapse creatures had been killed. In either case it's only on a small scale, it's not like entire Hive Fleets would be clawing at each other.

The Tau *sort of* have splinter factions, but they're kinda just beginning to show up - Shadowsun is a good example, and judging by the advance order description it looks like not everyone gets along with new character Darkstrider.
Eldar had splinter factions even before the Fall - remember how the Rangers and Exodites fled before Slaanesh's creation? You could also class Dark Eldar as another splinter, who themselves have many different houses vying for power in Comorragh.
Orks have clans, as mentioned, Chaos is *always* fighting itself whether it's warbands, Legions fighting (or even Legion infighting) or daemonic struggles. Necrons have different dynasties and the new Codex has examples of how they have fought each other, sometimes for power, sometimes because the re-awakening drove one side mad/faulty.

In short, there isn't really a major player in the 40k universe that DOESN'T have different factions within itself. Closest I can think of are the Grey Knights being a one-off special Chapter with no successors or similar Chapters, and they're still part of the Imperium.
