Well, as I feared with tranny elves.

I'll still get all the flying stuff. Not that my list ever has that much room since there is no way I'll move away from a White Lion/Chrace themed force.

Hopefully they don't make the WL chariots junk or some non-sense to push new sales.

Looking at them I can almost hear the GW design team's committee on the female form.

"Add hearts!" "Where?" "EVERYWHERE!". Adequately feminine.

I do agree the paint job will play a large part in how they look; softer highlights on the face would help. No self-respecting woman would wade into the midst of tumultuous battle without foundation!

Girl screaming is fine, its the middle one and opposite end which strike me as too masculine, but in general I'll be using them, just a shame they don't hold up to their champion.

Aye, this is a case of finecast Maiden Guard would have been better served than a mixed kit with the Shadow Warriors, unless they had made them mostly female as well.
This call leaves the Maden Guard in an odd position, and the champion, who is a finecast addition by the looks of it totally stands out against the rest of her unit.

Everqueen is not exactly what I was hoping for, but I've no doubt I'll grab one.

Phoenixes are still cool, and the chariot isn't half bad, so will have one of those as well, plus a good chunk of Shadow Warriors.

I have been wondering if maybe the "Maidenguard" was a misunderstanding or an expectation of a continuation of the 'original' Maidenguard.
It could very well be that these bow wielding individuals are a totally separate unit and that the "Maidenguard" are unit attachments of a sort.

It also occurs to me that the "Eagle Chariot" is going to be a great opportunity for bits.
You get a Great Eagle, parts for a Bolt Thrower, and what looks to be options almost as diverse as the plastic High Elf Lord kit for a foot lord and then a random Elf to assemble as you see fit.

Even elven females are shorter in stature, have less broad shoulders, smaller hands/feet, and different facial structure then their male counterparts. I can understand faces being a little bleh after painting. Dude faces have always look a little bleh as well. but when you factor in the other things, it helps with the visual "that ones male and that ones female" as opposed to "is that man dressed as a woman or a woman dressed as a man" which we are getting at this point.

I'm starting to feel more and more that mixed gender kits should be reserved for their boxed sets with fixed posses, since there they can just make definitive male and female sculpts and not worry about the rest (like multi parts matching up in 600,000 different combinations).

Again, i'm rather dissappointed.

@Kan - Its certainly possible, also might explain why there seems to be no continuity between the Guard and the Everqueen unlike their previous editions where it felt like she belonged with her bodyguard.

If's its just a new elite unit from Avellorn it might not be as jarring.

Ok soo I am seeing some really dumb stuff flying boat chariot thing being pulled by eagle. Wow that is just way to over the top. I am glad to see new sculpts for the shadow warriors they were always my favorite part of high elf lore I hope they expand on them more and give a viable option to run an army based entirely off of them. A new sculpt for the shadow king would be awesome too, just saying.

What citation is needed? They're just accepted common differences between male and female humanoid archetypes, and therefore would look the most female to our human brains.

You can add proportionately wider hips and longer legs to that list too, but that would be expecting too much from GW

I dig it all.

I'm tempted to start up a High Elf army, because they are so thematically different from my Beastmen, but I can't justify it because the Spearmen and Archers are so... dated. I love everything else in the range.

50/50 on the Chariot (love the eagles hate the actual chariot and the whole concept)
Really liking the units and the characters, With the exception of the broken back mage and the oddly posed EQ.
Just dont like the Phoenixes at all. Bit silly.

Overall very much liking the old school look the infantry has, (Hearts everywhere) but really wish they had redone the core plastics rather than all this new stuff. The HE archers and spearmen in particular are FUGLY........

I'm really hoping that the Archers and Spearmen are garbage in the book and that Seaguard are good and that all of the nice models within the range are good. I'd be so upset if archers and Spearmen were good.

Looking at the Maiden Guard, wasn't there a rumour of a new archer unit with magical bows? or archers with magical bows?

OMG she has the power of heart!

Is that how you spot the slightly more feminine elfs? They have little hearts and flowers on everything?

As for this...

I actually kind of like the boat, the eagle pulling it however...

I mean once you've committed yourself to a flying boat thing how does having it towed by a giant eagle make it at all more realisitic or plausible? It's like GW can't quite accept magic and has to throw in something to make it work no matter how little sense it makes or how fugly the model becomes.

In defense of the design, the previous versions were pretty heartastic as well. Though the new Everqueen design is pretty weak compared to the old one.

The Sky Chariot thing suffers a lot from most recent GW sculpts in that individual elements are great, even fantastic, then they shove them all together and come out with confuzzled blinged up messes.

Compared to that Hoeth wizrd guy who's tripping over, with his giant long arms and weird proportions, the sky chariots look brilliant.

I do like the Phoenix and the Birds that pull the chariots though.

Lord help us when the Dwarves get new releases, we'll get Tavern's pulled by skunks, riding skies or some crap.

I'd forgotten how nice the old Alarielle was, and by Gary Morley no less!

The new one looks like a hooker by comparison.

well.. it could be that what we consider to be the maiden guard isn't really a new unit of maiden guard but just a new unit with magical bows.. I do agree that the single maiden guard figurine really doesn't fit in too well with the unit but not with the old maiden guard models either (which look horribly dated imho) so maybe this isn't the complete list of releases? Who knows

I'm not sold that the Blue bow unit is Maiden Guard either. Though, it is doubtful I will be getting Maiden guard at any rate

True, but I think the bigger problem is that High Elves have dragons. Next to which floating rowing boats being towed by a birdy look even sillier than they would on their own.

A pity as I like the 'elemental' Phoenix kits a lot.

I don't know why people think the Maiden Guard aren't feminine enough...they have hearts in place of skulls!

So "Girly=MOAR HEARTZ!!!1!!!" ?

totally makes sense from the company that brings us "Grimdark =MOARSKULLZ!!!!!!one!!!11"

oh well.

Tho it would have been nice if the maiden on the right didn't look so much like Willam Defoe...

Exactly. There have been many complaints over the years about too many skulls and not enough to interest female gamers.

GW have stumbled upon the perfect solution to both problems, as you say "MOAR HEARTZ!!!1!!!"

Again, I expect the following:
1.) Maiden Guard Commander
2.) Finecast recast of old Maiden Guard (because commander copies their style, weapon and head exactly)
3.) Magic Bow unit not called Maiden Guard (misnamed because of expectations)
