More stuff...
DOOR CONCEPTS 2.0
Small doors will be prevalent within the structure of the space hulk, leading to all manner of areas, from barracks to medicae bays.
For this concept I am trying to combine the aforementioned architectural styles; namely Gothic and Industrial. The industrial shapes are heavy and angular, since I want to give the impression that these doors are solid one tonne slabs of metal. They are hinged and have conventional handles (I may or may not add a handwheel or lever-action locking mechanism). At the top of each one is a test eagle, which I will probably remove for more functional areas of the vessel.
I’m currently working on an open version of the door, since these will be working, hinged models in the final space hulk.

WALL SECTIONS
As you can see, I've been messing around with a concept for a wall section. Plenty of rivets (including some spiky ones), plus some pipework. The red pipe is some sort of plasma conduit. The lumen strip globes could easily be added at the top of each section, or even every other section.
I can easily place a viewport or gothic casement in these wall sections, giving a view out into space.

Loving the progress your making.
Two things though,
1 lose the skulls, it's one thing I really dislike bout GW is skulls everywhere, it's easy enough to add them later, but if your going to cast these and possibly sell them then more basic is the route to go.
2 the spiky rivets don't really seam practical, maybe some other form of rivet, it's your design so feel free to ignore me, but it just seems odd for a design choice in a starship.
Keep up the great work, and don't tak my comments as negative, just as a different perspective (possible purchaser)

@Theophony
Cheers mate - I appreciate your honesty. I'm always after constructive criticism!
1. Skulls - I'm kinda with you on the skull thing; in the grimdark future they do seem to be everywhere! I put the skull on the eagle just because it was quick and easy (I happened to have a skull lying around)... I'll probably change it, since these are only concepts, after all.
2. Spiky rivets - No, they're not entirely practical, but I thought they might be a little more aesthetically pleasing than your standard rivet. After millennia in the empyrean there's always the possibility of rivets mutating into massive spiky bits! But again, these are just concepts at the moment.
Keep the criticism and ideas coming!

Do you see the Dreadhulk as one huge vessel, or is it more like the hulk in the Soul Hunters novels (the Brokenback)? This was a large number of vessels of various sizes, from many races, that had been fused together in the warp and then thrown back into realspace. The former would give you a more consistent look, whereas the latter might give you scope for some interesting/unusual mission objectives.

Well Mr P, I definitely see this Dread Hulk as being a conglomeration of many different vessels and galactic detritus, although for this project I shall be focussing on Imperial ship's architecture. The fluff behind this is that, back in the 31st millennium, a traitor fleet got a good kick in at the hands of loyalists. Over the aeons, the remnants of the destroyed fleet collected around the husk of a traitor battlebarge...

This looks like hard work. An airbrush and drybrushing will be your dear friends when it comes to painting this. What 3D program do you use? I've been looking for a good one.

Yeah, I'm trying not to think about eventually having to painting this monstrosity! May have to recruit some pro-painter friends...
I use SketchUp for all my CG model making. It's simple, easy to use and the free version is enough for most things.

Sounds great! I so dearly wish I could be part of this project. Heck, maybe this summer I'll start my own. School just got a 3D printer. Anyway, what are your plans for the next set of tiles? A cryogenic freezing chamber full of still-frozen troops, half-morphed into genestealers maybe?

Yeah, 3D printers are pretty cool and more and more schools (in the US and UK) seem to be getting them. Post up some images when you start your project on the P&M blog when you get some - it would be great to see what you come up with.
Plans for the next tile set? Hmm... I have a rather silly amount of ideas vying for attention inside the crevices of my brain. Cryogenic medicae chambers are certainly on the list somewhere, but a bit further down the line, since they fall under 'furnishings' and I'm working on structural elements at the moment.
But to give you an idea, I'm very keen on constructing a sprawling enginorium sector...

Loving the look of the floor panels and pipes. I've always seen Space Hulks as a conglomeration of ships smashed together by either warp or colllisions, is this an effect youre going for, or simply large, grimdark, corridor sections?

I'll try out that 3D modelling program, Sketchup. Blender is what I currently use, but I'm not totally comfortable with it yet.
I definitely agree with you making structural features first. Maybe just make a ton of interchangeable hallways with piping and stuff around them to start with, and then get the rooms done afterwards.

Cheers dapidgeon!
The ultimate aim is to have a vessel that reflects a hulk that has been adrfit in the warp for millennia, so it will be an amalgamation of many different vessels, as you say. I see this ship as consisting mostly of the remnants of a traitor fleet that was vanquished during the Horus Heresy. It will include many different Imperial vessels from cruisers to bulk carriers, whilst at its heart is the deformed wreck of a traitor astartes battlebarge...
But for now, at least, I am concentrating on a more generic structural styling, namely Industrial Gothic. I may throw in some alien stuff/galactic detritus at a much later date.

Blender is a great program and you can do more than you'll ever be able to do in SketchUp, however as I'm sure you've noticed, there's a lot to learn!
Yep - the plan is to make this thing modular with interchangeable sections and so forth. Now, back to the enginorium...

I love the idea of this project, and you are indeed Nucking Futs, i cant wait to see how it turns out. I only wish i had the skill level you are after or the time to help you out.
Ok, doors. you said you intend for them to look solid etc, if they were really that heavy, they would probably be hydraulic powered sliding doors. or thats atleast my take on it.
Rivets, pointy i dont like. i prefer the round topped or hexagonal bolt like rivets.
Bulkheads, you said you envision it being many ships smushed together. So there would obviously be buckling of metals, and different design styles fairly close together, and probably a whole metric butt load of decompressed gantries and rooms.
I know your not really thinking that far ahead yet. but its in my head right now, and i would love to see it pulled off.
Engine room/ section. i picture these things being mahoosive, and encorporating several floors and quite large, i like the idea of large cooling towers, powering the ships systems could be an interesting objective encompassing multiple zones.

Cheers Muzzah. You're not the first to mention a disliking of the spiky rivets, but these are purely concept designs at the moment and will be changed. I'm just getting my ideas down in 3D. The spiky bits will probably go, to be honest, but I may include them in more chaotic/warped sections of the structure.
For doors, I'll be including anything from the one above (which is based upon doors that you'd find in a WW2 battleship) to big slidy doors, huge portals and mahoosive hangar bay doors. I'll also be making smaller maintenance hatches in floors and walls for genestealers to jump out and surprise any intrepid space marines. I imagine that not all doors would be hydraulic or automatically open - especially in the darker recesses of more practically designed areas like the enginorium.
Talking of the enginorium, it will indeed be mahoosive (it looks fuggin' huge inside my head!) and will be over many different levels, with plasma/warp drives, cooling chambers, assorted machinery, ladders, bridges, walkways, gantries and lots and lots of pipework. I envision epic battles taking place within this section of the ship...
