So your third and fifth turn will be dedicated to laying down enchantments. Turns that you have to tap out. A two card combo to randomly draw a land or lightning bolt a creature/player on turn six? Because you only scry 1, there could still be another land or nonland underneath your scry. Too much investment for far too little far too late.

It's pretty good, and it can be built around. It doesn't win the game by itself though, and it relies too heavily on permission from your opponent.

True, it is a good card, and like sinful hero says, it's ability really only triggers with the spells cast by your opponent. But........another good card is...... CHARGING BADGER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (its a running joke at my shop) But what makes it even better, is if its foil, and has flying......... flying honey badger!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!, just wanted to add to the conversation..... but seriously, has anyone, actually played a badger on turn 1, then tossed on a phytoburst on turn 2 to make it a 6/6 trampler on turn 2? Or are people not even considering it?

you can do the same thing to spire tracer as well, and opponents cant block it unless one of their creatures has reach

Atheros is the most interesting, that's for sure.

It's hard to evaluate a card like that, without some real play testing though.

If he was G/B... That would be pretty amazing to go with Golgari. Instead we get Pharika.. yuck.

Nah, making 1/1 Deathtouchers is terrible, no possible use for that (yet I remember the outcry of people wanting Garruk, the Veil-cursed's 1/1 Deathtouch Wolf token, probably because a lot of people were playing him.) [/sarcasm]

I still love how RiP just shuts this guy down. Least they could've done was make it a replacement effect.

I could definitely see Junk playing him. Typically Junk likes stuff like Athreos and Pharika combined.

wow..........nobody ..... well...... i have also decided to see if i could toss together a mono- black devotion deck, but as a budget deck........ heres the list!

26 swamp

4 underworld connections
4 bile blight
3 doom blade
3 ultimate price
4 duress

4 nightveil specter (going down in price, hooray!!!)
4 desecration demon (also lowering in price, hooray!!!)
4 gray merchant of asphodel (or 'Gary' as we call him at my local shop)
4 daggerdrome imp, (or something else i will find a good mono-black creature for, besides pack rat., pack rats are good, but i'd like to see if the deck could work without them, just to see what works out)

To the flash deck- drop shambleshark for Cloudfin Raptor. You don't have anything to play first turn, and it's not like you would have much to respond to anyway. Later in the game one blue mana won't hold you back much. I'll look at your monoblack deck later.

ok, yeah, everything is a 2 drop and higher for creatures, and ive also been trying to develop an even cheaper list for the mono black devotion deck

In your monoblack drop 2x swamps(monoblack doesn't need 26 lands, especially if you're mostly just turning things sideways), 4x Spiteful Returned, and 1x Underworld Connections for more 1-2 CMC creatures that like to be turned sideways. You want Corrupt and Grey Merchant to be finishers, and to so that you need to be chipping away early.

Not a fan of Blood Scrivenor myself, and I would put the Spectre back in to help with devotion for Grey Merchant. You're still pretty heavy on lands IMO.

done, i added read the bones for more draw power, but i was also thinking of altars reap, BUT...... i'd have to sac a creature as an additional cost...... so..... i went with the read the bones, unless a shrieking affliction, or duress would work better, shrieking affliction would be nice because it would add 1 more devotion, and stabs at my opponent, but they have to have 1 or less card(s) in hand, but it would still add to my devotion

Lol, and you swung too far the other way on your lands. Cut Underworld Connections by one, and one other card by one, and add two swamps back in. You're monocolored, but have a fairly high curve so 24 lands should suit your deck well.

ty, yeah, i'd like to also make this deck ASAP, since i am also building the flash deck at the same time, but i have most of the cards for the flash deck, which is top priority at the moment

alrighty!!!!!!! i made the flash deck..... and tried it yesterday/last night at my local FNM... and it was ok..... but i gotta work out the kinks, etc. Anyways...... The mono black devotion deck has been coming along VERY WELL!!!! the desecration demons are now at $4 each!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! HOORAY i saved my wallet!!!!!! i got 2 of them off a friend who bout his 4 back when they were still $10 each.... so when i told him they were only $4 now....he was pissed.... and probably wanted to punch me...... but i got 2 of them at least, and now im going to go get 2 more at another game store near my relative's house, and they have them priced at $10 still..... but i told them they dropped to $4, so he told me he'd check also when i get there, and if they are $4, he'd sell them to me for $4........ , also...... to replace the nightveil specters.... i was thinking of maybe just using abhorrent overlords,or herald of torment....so i'll do some looking, to see what might be another alternative, since i do not really have much $$$ to spend on 4 specters.....

Alrighty..... well, I narrowed it down to a few possibilities for an alternative for night veil specter for the mono black devotion-

1. herald of torment- good because he only costs 3 mana, and can be a great early game threat, BUT, he is costing me 1 life per turn, , but im already taking a couple life off myself when using read the bones, or underworld connections

2. Necropolis regent- gives me +3 black devotion,
is a high powered flyer, which could help with taking on flyers, BUT, her mana cost is 6, when I'd like the deck to be played fairly fast, even though the corrupt and gray merchant also cost from 5-6 mana. So it might be worth it....

3. abhorrent overlord- gives me +2 black devotion, and also has an ability that goes with devotion, which would give me a bunch of 1/1 or 2/2 black flying harpy tokens which I could use as extra creatures, and to use as little 1/1 pingers, or bitch blockers, in order to save me from attacks. BUT, the mana cost is 6, and like I said before, id like the deck to be played fairly fast although the corrupt and gray merchant cost 5-6 mana.

Other possibilities include- nightmare, marshmist titan, wight of the sixth precinct, crypt ghast,, nighthowler, or maybe just use the remaining 4 slots in the deck for devour flesh's, (which I still think is sort of a dumb idea to use, since your giving your opponent life, after forcing them to sac creature), dying wish, duress, pithing needles, staff of the night magus, or something else that might go well with this type of deck

Out of those options- Definitely the herald. Helps keeps your curve down, and if you get it late game bestow it. (Corrupt can offset some of your life loss)

Yeah, the herald was most likely going to be the winner anyways, since he is a 3 drop, and could be played whenever, and the life wouldnt really matter since i would play the deck quickly and fast to crush my opponents, and........ my friends have no idea im actually making the deck.......... oh boy........ well.... i told maybe 1 or 2....... but i dont think they really heard me, or they just ignored it...... that is because not many people at my local shop really like the mono-black devotion decks and its variants...... so im most likely going to get a lot of crap for using it. But, once i also perfect the flash deck, which i beat my friends tier 1 u/w control (the pro tour build with jaces, elspeths, etc) with it, and he just sort of sat there..... amazed...( that is because he usually wins with it, and never lost much with it). So i'll have to get the playstyle for the flash deck down to an art fairly quick, since i'll probably be playing TONS of magic, especially this coming weekend, with the pre-release and all. My friend (not the guy with the u/w control) also started to get a bit hot headed about my deck since he started blabbing at me and saying "your not playing it right!! no, play the chimera!" when hes never actually played the deck, or done anything with it, so it was stupid of him to comment on how i was playing it, and it was the first tournament i used it in so its all good. But once i finish the mono black devotion.......... all hell is gonna break loose..... >

Congratulations on your wins then. You seem fairly excited about them! You should definitely try to get as many games as you can with your flash deck against all kinds of opponents- the more you know about your opponents strategies(and yours) the better you'll get.

ty, yeah, i cant wait to toss the mono-black devotion and flash decks into the tournament scene in my area, since a lot of people just think my decks are more of the 3rd or 4th place type of decks that wont really win much, when they arent really. But yeah, the mono black will hopefully tear a new one for my opponents. And yeah, the flash deck seems really good, but when i found it online, there were vids for it, but no description on what to play when, or how to play the deck in a specific way and stuff, but i'll have to go back and watch the vids to see what the guy playing it on the MTGO games does.

But how might i develop a playstyle for the flash? hmmmm...... well, its obvious that the decks theme is flash, but to work out how the win conditions would work and certain combos etc, will take a bit of time, hopefully i can fix stuff before this weekend

alrighty.... what color would/will be the best at the pre-release? a lot of people around my area are going green, and white, and i have a feeling that black will not get much attention for some reason..... hmmm..... i think i'll try and go white, but maybe also maybe black, or blue, red im not too sure about though...

well, ive decided to go along with using nightveil specters...... hopefully i can trade for them, but im most likely going to have to pay cash for them at some point. Woops! i forgot to say what the specters are for...... mono black devotion....... or..... does anyone know of any card i could use in place of nightveil specter? herald of torment?

I've just come home from prerelease, I did two sessions. The first I went white-black, had two wins and ended on a draw. Best pulls were the BW god and the RU god (which I obviously couldn't use) as well as a Hero's Downfall. Second session I had no outstanding cards and went green-blue with little hope. Somehow I managed two wins before losing the last match. It's been a fun day, had some great pulls from packs that made it worth it and I have a small pile of prize boosters to take away for later.

I also had a nice prerelease last night/this morning! I went with blue...... but never even played any blue in my deck. I went black/red aggro, usually dropping my opponent to about 10 life, or so on turn 3 or 4, dependnig on what i drew, mostly running minotaurs, and zombies, etc. a buddy of mine pulled a hydra broodmaster, AND a kruphix, which he used to pump up his hydra with all the extra mana, and overwhelmed my creatures with his 37/37 broodmaster, and 5 5/5 hydra tokens, which was a "oh gak..... " moment cuz i wasnt drawing any creatures to bitch block any of his creatures. BUT, the BEST moment was when i played against a guy who was just starting magic, and got quite lucky when he made his heroe's bane hydra a 256/256, (yes, its possible) and i never pulled a single kill spell..... oh well, it was really fun overall, and it didnt really matter, if i won or lost, since i really just wanted to crack packs, and play with the new cards. Although i didnt get an ajani, (the new journey into nyx version), i DID get a hold of 4 nightveil specters, to finish off my monoblack devotion deck, which REALLY made feel relieved , since i didnt have much cash on me to buy them off anyone, so luckily my friend was scrapping them out of his new black/blue mill standard. Overall, it was a great night/morning, got to watch the sunrise, while chugging a MONSTER energy drink, the good times.......

Also...... since i got a heroe's bane myself, so I might have to make myself a little gruul hydra deck, since when the ravnica block gets turned out of standard, i will have to scrap my izzet and mono black devotion deck. so...... imagine a massive heroe's bane hydra, with a madcap skills ( until the ravnica blaock leaves standard)............ > fun stuff....

Wait, how did Broodmaster become 37/37 and only getting 5 5/5 hydra tokens? That would mean that Broodmaster shouldn't have been larger than 12/12... ???

Creatures with monstrous can't use the ability multiple times, etc. Creatures can only become monstrous once while still on the field, unless they're blinked, etc.
