Which would be better for a casual, two army game table size-wise? A table that measures 4x3 ft, or 6x2ft?

If you're asking about WHFB/40k, 6'x4' is the standard table size

~5000+ pts (95% Deathwing )
~1500 pts

6x2 is ridiculously narrow would limit maneuverability to the point of killing strategy.

On a long narrow board the terrain would dictate the winner. little LOS blocking terrain would make a killing field for CC based armies to be slaughtered by ranged weapons and any LOS blocking terrain in the middle would enable a CC army to ambush a ranged army unscathed.

4x4 is fairly typical for smaller point encounters. You could run small 500 pt skirmishes on a 4x3 but I'd advise adding that extra four square feet.

EDIT:
6x4 is indeed the standard table size for average point value games. Large pt value games and apocalypse can have larger tables. Most tourney's I've played in were 6x4 (the exception being 2nd ed 8x4 tables).

8x4 used to be the standard. If you have the space for it, I'd still recommend it. Having the extra foot on either side is nice for books and casualties. Plus if you want to do an apoc game, you can just use the whole table.

If space is an issue, go with the 4x4.

Great comments. I've extended the table by quite a bit, I found another piece of the awesome board I'm using. The table now measures 6x3. I'll post pictures after dinner.

Exalting this. This is the perfect size if you have the space. 6'x4' to play in with 2' on the end for all your resources and units before deploying or after death. If you are relly crafty, put a shelf up attatched to all the legs underneath the table that you can put bins on to keep terrain in. Thas what my FLGS does.

I highly recommend expanding it further. 4 feet is really the minimum width for an effective table for games of 40k. I'd rather play on a 4x5 than a 6x3. I have a 4x7 that I made out of two sets of accordion doors (2 pairs of 2 panels, each is 1x7) . Each pair folds and gets put away on the porch and the four of them sit nicely on a pair of 2x4's that I put over my dining room table or a set of sawhorses.

Smaller skirmish games like Malifaux or Infinity might be able to get away with a 3x3, but that's pushing it.

Not exactly an expert on this myself as I myself haven't played since school, when a gaming table was just a couple of desks pushed together

But I would agree with the above and go 6x4' for standard games, 4x4 for smaller points values and you could even get away with 2x2 for really small games, like the old Kill Team missions.
