Hi, just starting to get into 40k and pretty much every question I googled led me to here. Originally was planning to play Tau as I had a model and an old codex and have Imperial Guard as an ally after reading the first book of the Word Bearers omnibus (loved the Valkyrie and stormtroopers). However I decided to shift to an IG army. This was due to a couple of factors, the excellent Gaunt's Ghosts novels (I'm just about to finish the first omnibus and have ordered the other two) the range of tactical choices the IG have and just how cool the models look. In the process of putting together a small force to get me started (have the cadian battleforce on order along with an additional command squad and picked up a box of shock troopers on ebay) so will be spending the next few weeks painting. Still have my Tau commander and a couple of squads of fire warriors which are all undercoated and even have one squad base coated but they will be on the backburner as the new Codex will probably need a little while to bed in (a hopefully in a few months time there may be some bargains on ebay). I'll use what I have as allies until then (if I can think of a good reason for them to be helping my force) but long term I'm pretty committed to the IG now.
Looking forward to getting to know you all and hoping that you can continue to answer my questions and give me advice (even if you didn't know you were doing it before). Cheers.

Will have to check those books out when I get done with Gaunt (which may be a while). Have to admit to not having come across Cain before so thank you for the suggestion.
