Amazingly, I've never played any version of Axis & Allies.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.

In the dark recesses of your mind...

I was really excited about A&A 1914 until reading a couple reviews. It seems that the game lacks in playing pieces (extras of which can be ordered), and that the board design is not very well thought out. I'll likely wait for a redesign or wait for a port to PC which would alleviate these problems.

Can I be pedantic and point out that there would have been no Axis in WW1

Will check it out though.

Axis and Allies is the Brand. I wasn't stoked on the name either but it looks pretty cool to me. Lots of haters on boardgamegeek.com. I'm going on an amazon binge: cathedral, wizwar, axis and allies: 1914, Cosmic Encounter and pledging on kickstarter for Sails of Glory. Crazy I know.

Axis and Allies is probably my favourite boardgame. If you and your buddies are war junkies I'd highly recommend playing it, particularly 1942 second edition. I havent played 1914 but I've heard it has balance issues, but it shouldnt stop you from trying the other versions.

Let's be honest, 'Central Powers and the Triple Entente' doesn't have the same ring to it as 'Axis and Allies'.

It does to me!

To be honest I've always been sceptical about how a WW1 game would work. In the words of Blackadder would it not be better just to stay in England and shoot 50,000 men a week!

How do the mechanics of a WW1 game work. Do the armies just face each other in trenches for a long time whilst doing nothing for 4 years?

1914 was still pretty fluid with the executuion of the Schlieffen Plan and the Race to the Sea.

It wasn't until later that things bogged down into the horrors of the Western Front we think about today.

Plus, the Eastern Front was much more fluid through much of the war.
