We had a couple rules questions pop up last night during a game that we couldn't find a direct answer to in then in the books or faqs.

1. I had a couple deffcopta's get charged and we couldn't figure out if they could overwatch or not. They don't have a vehicle profile but they're not infantry either.

2. In mutliple combats with characters in each squad can the challenger pick which squad in the multi combat that he will challenge or does he simply challenge and the opposing player pick who takes the challenge.

Example:

6-7 nurgle chaos marines plus lord with black mace are charged by a squad of boys with a power klaw nob to soak up overwatch. Then a fully kitted out nob squad with warboss charge in second. The lord is in base to base with the boys squad only but the nurgle marines are in base to base with both if that matters. The lord has to challenge but since we couldn't find out if you could pick a squad or not we assumed that i could pick who accepts like normal so I had the boys nob accept.

On a side note I know that when nobs are in a unit together they loss the character special rule but what about the painboy. Does he still count as a character since hes unique to the squad or does he lose it also?

1) Non vehicle models can overwatch
2) You challenge the enemy in the combat, not any particular model or unit

Painboy is a character

As for challenges - You pick one of your characters and issue a challenge to the enemy. If your enemy accepts, they pick which character accepts is there are multiple models - he gets to pick who accepts....

Your Character does NOT have to be in B2B...they just have to be in the fight. When you challenge you move to B2B with the enemy if you are not. Then if he accepts, he moves into B2B with your character....

There is no X challenges Y - it is X Challenges you, the enemy, who steps forward and acepts

Slight correction on that. You don't actually move the challenge models into base contact, they're just considered to be there. This becomes important for abilities with templates for base contact, such as Yriel's eye or Typhus' Destroyer Hive.
It does, however, dictate abilities statng base contact to only affect the other challenger... examples being Mindshackle Scarabs or Gabriel Seth's whirlwind.

Yes, you do.

Yup. If a challenge is accepted you do indeed move. If one is refused, OTOH, the model "hiding in the back" does not actually move anywhere, and wounds can be allocated TO him exactly as normal. He just doesn't get to attack and the squad can't use his LD.

Another question that came up. I fully kited out the nobs squad just to fill points since I'm low on models. We weren't sure if my painboy would still have his eavy armor upgrade or if he loses it when I turn him into a painboy. Does anyone know?

From the official Ork FAQ:

Q: Can a Painboy in a unit of Nobs take the ‘eavy armour, bosspole, Waaagh! Banner or ammo runt upgrades? (p98)
A: No.

It's not a case of him loosing it, just don't buy it before you upgrade.
