I have been wondering recently which mark my chaos lord should take?

I'm drawn to Nurgle because of T5 plague marines as troops but they are both expensive points wise and money wise for a troop choice and I only get 5 models a box...

Khorne may be a good choice but I have no dedicated transports for my berserkers to go in before they get shot to pieces with a maximum of 12 inch range

So Slaanesh may be a good choice with noise marines being relatively cheap in points but the trouble is I do not know how to make them. Do I get the plague marines box and also get noise weapons or what?

Theres seven plague marines in a box, not five.

Walking berserkers is a bad idea.

You buy the regular pack of chaos marines and add the noise marine upgrade sprue (if you want noise weapons).

Not in a full size unit, especially if you can give them Infiltrate via Warlord trait or an attached IC. It takes a dedicated snooty army like Tau or IG to blunt that one before it makes it to combat.

More generally - what does the rest of your list look like, and what do you want the Lord to do? Personal preference is a Khorne Lord with the Axe of Blind Fury in the aforementioned Berzerker unit.

Nurgle to me is the easiest option on all fronts, T5 is rarely not worth it, plague marines are easy to use and survivable as all hell.

I've converted plague marines out of chaos marines and green stuff, you could save a lot of money by just spending $10 on greenstuff and making an extra 3 marines per box set (also they'd be unique and cool looking).

Really if you can't decide on a mark for a unit mark of nurgle is usually the best default because it almost always has a tangible impact.

Just use chaos marines and paint them green no worries

NURGLE! Plague marines arn't that expensive and are worth their points. I once got them in a assult against 10 terminators and they stille came out on top. T5 plus poisen plus FNP makes them AMAZING :

That's so boring though when compared to the ease of making fantastic nurgle dudes.

You literally just have to throw greenstuff at the model and you start getting cool conversions.

If you're ok with using basic CSMs or cultists, then consider MoTz with sigil for a 3++.

I'll agree that Nurgle is probably the best overall, gives you access to great troops, yes they are expensive in points but they are worth their points so it's ok. And you get a T5 lord which get protection from Power Fists/lascannons instant death.

Khorne is great only if you are going for the daemon weapon, either in termie armor or on a juggy, otherwise I personally wouldn't take him. And even though it unlocks zerks, zerks aren't really that good, sure WS5 is nice but the lack of special weapons and bolters makes them lack the versatility of CSM with MoK. The CSM is cheaper when the MoK and additional CCW is paid, if you plan on attaching that khorne lord to the squad then the fearless on the zerks is wasted so you pretty much lose the WS5 but gain 24" shots while you are getting closer to the enemy and access to meltas so that you can open any transport and assault whatever might be inside.

Behind them I think Slaanesh would be the next best thing due to the noise marines unlock, they aren't as resilient as the plague but they are still fearless, cheap and great at shooting, the downside is that your lord needs to go with a close combat unit, there are no shooty lords configurations and even if you get something semi-good at shooting you are wasting the I6.

Tzeentch is only good to give your lord Sv3++

I usually go With Plague squads, but proxied them as CSM With MoN yesterday. Worked out awesome 500 pt game.

What about khorne lord on juggernaut. Turns unit into cavalry. Still foot slogging it but at 12 plus feet and HoW.

A Khorn loard on a juggernaught with a PF and Lightning claw, and sigil of corruption is a poor man's version of a Daemon Prince. He hits really really hard for 180 Points.

PM are awesome.

Khorne lord with jugger and AoBF is a beast.
As of now, I am prefer running regular marines with MoK than berzerkers.

In high point games, I have a MoK lord and a MoN lord / Typhus. I then run half my troops as PM, the other half as MoK marines or cultists.

Wow many replies, I think I'll go for Nurgle because I need a resilient troops choice instead of some cultists or to buff them. Hopefully they'll build up enough to totally take over the cultists. Reliable troop choices are hard to come by. Mind you, do they have any weaknesses I need to know about?

Don't underestimate plain CSM with a mark of nurgle, and ANYONE can take them. They make great cheap objective holders, and you don't have to take nurgle on your lord, which still leaves you open to take things like berserkers and noise marines as troops by loading out your lord with the appropriate god. Also, don't forget that you HAVE to challenge, so slaanesh does come in useful for first strike.

Initiative 5 is pretty solid though don't you think? My lord has a power sword so I don't really need to worry about lethality...
