I watched this video for infinity:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=B_A7CK8VPi4

and wondered is getting just models I like the best way for me to make an army?

I am still new to infinity so I do not have many models.

Basically the question is should I buy models I like or get models that are tactically useful.

I say this because I played 40k for years and I have a mindset of getting units that are strategically useful in games.

Get anything you like because almost everything is tactically useful in-game.

Really, this isn't 40k where one unit is inherently unbalanced over the other and you can create just a limited number of lists which would be competitive. While possible, it's hard to actually make a bad list in Infinity, or the "wrong" combination of troops. As long as you follow some rule of thumbs (at least 8 regular orders per combat group, have one Lt.) you're good to go.

Me, I chose a lot of snipers on my list without actually thinking the tactical significance of snipers. Served me well so far.

In light of this thread, what are the models you like? If you can give us a list more often than not the community can give you a good* list using those models.

*good in the sense that it's beginner friendly.

The models I like are:

bagh mari
akalis sikh
knights of santiago
order sergeants
nisse
teutonic knights

non-panoceania:

gao tarsos
asawira regiment
hassasin lasiqs
gao rael

I also made a 300pt list:

eNozMlQ1VzNQM6yxAJOGRmpGaoZqealW3n6e7h4hCv5uCk7+Tgo+mamlNeZAGZhCS5C6GkNTsJChoZoxkDIBiQEAGhITTg==

models I do not mention here in this post that are in this army are there for solely tactical reasons.

In the case of the knight hospitaleirs in the army I do not necessarily like them.

You're better off copying it to clipboard so we can see the whole thing.

Anyway, your list does not contain 8 or more regular orders (you have two AD troops) and while it can work, it'll be hard for a beginner since you'll be starved of orders, especially at 300 points. You're also 3 points above the limit.

Also take note that starting the game with 300 points will be entirely overwhelming, rules wise. Try starting at 150 points first. You can always proxy models and, unlike 40k, proxying is very much encouraged.

As heartserenade said - you first have to trim the 3 points over the limit, as these points put you in a new bracket - list constructed in Infinity are at 50 point intervals, so in theory, your opponent could be playing a 350 point list.

Secondly, you have too few orders, with 2 orders starting off the board in Combat Jump.

Thirdly, I also suggest starting smaller - you could try this 200 point list. I tried incorporating the models you liked:

Panoceania | 8 models

Bagh-Mari HMG (27|1.5)
Bagh-Mari Combi (22|0)
Akal HMG (32|1.5)
Santiago Combi (44|0)

Fusilier Combi (10|0)
Nisse Paramedic (35|0)
Order Sergeant Spitfire (20|1)

So what is the recommended amount of orders at each points level?

6 orders at 200pts? and so forth.

Because if I tried having 8 orders at 200pts, I will be basically getting models I absolutely do not like.

Edit:
I just made another list is this okay?

I have no idea how to use clipboard.

Can't seem to get that list working.

Six orders can get a little close in my opinion, but is workable in friendly games (The combined army and Steel Phalanx box are almost 200 points with just six models).

The best way I would say is to get one of the starter boxes. Sure you'll end up with a couple units that might not float your boat, but you'll have a better idea of how things play out and what you're lacking. Even if you're not a huge fan of some of the models, keep in mind the line troopers are basically used to get you extra orders (and sometimes pull off a couple shots). So you'll be mainly using the units you like.

Where in Canada are you?

No, unfortunately. Together, the bot and controller give one. But one the other hand, they always activate together.

Try using this site to get lists - it's updated to have the newest units, too:
