I've hashed this out with some buddies, but would Lysander joining a Riptide with two drones and being in front really have a 2+/3+ toughness 6 eternal warrior, even though he only takes up about about a shin of the Riptide?

Yeah, but with the exception of giving the unit an additional 5 wounds he really does nothing for it. For his cost you could take another riptide, get your 5 wounds and have twice the shooting firepower.

Independent Characters can join other units. They cannot, however, join vehicle squadrons (see page 77) or units that always consist of a single model (such as most vehicles and Monstrous Creatures). They can join other Independent Characters, though, to form a powerful multi-character unit!

Its legal. Tau dex says drones bought as upgrades are counted as members of the unit for all purposes.

Riptide is not a unit of 1 and Lysander is battle brothers with tau, so your absolutely able to join him to a riptide.

Drones are models, so the Riptide is not a unit that always consists of a single model.

That said, why?

Lysander just slows the Riptide down and gets his melee potential wasted.

If all you want is a T6 Lysander, just take Cassius, form the two of them into a IC squad, and watch them tear across the table in a buddy comedy of carnage and destruction.

A lot more synergy there then in a giant death robot.

The Riptide can't be a giant death robot, its completely lacking a sword or massive chainsaw. All giant death robots have swords or massive chainsaws.

Maybe the Riptide can swing Lysander as a CCW?

I think you're forgetting something

Spoiler:

They can also have giant drills

I have a peanut allergy. It's really inconsiderate.

Right, however I am still seeing a distinct lack of drills. Of course everybody also knows drills are readily concealable within even the smallest of body parts so its still a distinct possiblity.

Well, considering the Riptide is a MC, that means he can smash.

That gave me the mental image that a riptide just jump jet onto tanks and stomp em flat.

Sure, but with only WS2 he's not going to smash much besides vehicles. And he better hope he's not fighting something able to pound him flat before he gets to swing. Like a Dreadnought or Dreadknight.

Most dreads will get 2 or 3 attacks. And will likely drop 1 between to hit and to wound rolls. .5++ and FNP will stop another so you will take 1 wound per round. You hit the dread on a 4 with 2(3 if you charge)attacks. The rip tide should get about 1 pen per round. vs a dread (a roll of 5+ on the vehicle damage table kills it outright with other results having crippling effects).

A riptide will kill most dreads CC. Considering that you are outspending the dread at 2:1, this shouldn't be a surprise.

MC's however will likely take you lunch money. The only ones I would give odds to the riptide on are maybe the tervigon or harpie.(the tervigons 6 wounds and psychic powers make this close. I tend to consider using the Nova reactor for a 3++ about a wash since it can wound the riptide 1/3 the time.

Sorry for the thread necro, even if it is relatively minor, but I just saw this linked in a sig and thought to add my own two pennies;

The Riptide is lacking a sword, you say? When it does a Smash Attack, I can't help but imagine it reversing the polarity of its Shield Generator to make an energy blade, complete with the shield turning on its arm to point the prongs forward and a snap-hiss of energy redirection. :p Beam sabers for the win.

No because the drones are T6, heavy missile drones or something...

As others have said, for Lysander's price you might as well take another riptide.

if you must take lysander (which would require an accompanying sternguard squad or something similar) running him with the riptide isn't advisable because it slows the riptide down so.

Shielded missile drones are T6.

The only possible issue is that O'shassera can take 3 drones - she's T3 though, and her drones T4. So everything stays the majority highest, at T6.

CaptainJay wrote:No because the drones are T6, heavy missile drones or something...

25 points for a drone with T6, a missile pod and a shield generator.

Edit: realised thread was a bit older than I first expected.
