What did you guys think? I wasn't too impressed with it. It wasn't awful, per se, but.... I dunno, it just never really connected with me in any meaningful way.

Haven't seen it yet, but I really want to...
How's the technical special effects though? I'm sure you can discuss that w/o spoilering...

The effects were very good. There wasn't a single scene that didn't look realistic, generally.

I really enjoyed the movie. The effects were well done. Nothing cutting edge super awesome special effect magic type but well suited to the movie.
I love the original and it's campy offspring and I still enjoyed this remake. It was original enough to not make me feel like I'd already seen this movie yet very true to the spirit of it's origin.

It wasn't a bad horror film, but its not an 80's horror film. The tech's just too far forward to give off the same effect that the original had.

Thats why Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 is one of my fav "slasher flicks" the tech in it and the campyness of the whole movie I just LOVE.

Most importantly- was there any scene chewing B-movie star? The Campbell factor really drove that franchise.

No - not at all. Maybe that's what was missing. For a moment I thought one of them would, but he never really got into it enough.

Remember... Evil Dead was modeled in "theme" to the first Evil Dead... not the campy-ish Evil Dead 2 that everyone loved.
Having said that... I'm going to see this move without any prejudice.

The first Evil Dead still had a very tounge in cheek sense of humour even if it wasnt outright camp. I've only seen the trailer for the new film but it just looked like evrey other teen horror flick out there.

Stupid Sam Raimi, thinking he knows anything about the Evil Dead series. He shouldn't have been allowed to produce or write the script for this abomination. That Bruce Campbell guy seems to be pretty clueless as well as to what the series is all about.

I'm looking forward to it, especially any making of special features they put out. Can you imagine Bruce Campbell directing? Now there's a movie that would probably be the equal of 'Hearts of Darkness'.
I'll have to wait for netflix though- my wife and son do not like horror films.

I'm pretty sure he was making a joke guys. It's evident with him mocking Sam Raimi, the guy who created the series.

It was... okay I suppose. Didn't quite have the campy charm of it's predecessors and it had a notable lack of chin... decent, didn't really connect with me.

I guess the key to this is to try and forget Evil Dead II and Army of Darkness, and just think of it as a modern version of the original.

I see you also used that phrase. It's very apt in this case. There was nothing wrong with the movie, it just never really made me feel anything, with perhaps the exception of the tongue\boxcutter.
So far as considering this a remake of the original Evil Dead - or, as Sam Raimi said, how he'd have done it if he had today's technology: I had long thought there were some movies I would like to have remade... well, remade isn't the exact word. I have long thought there were movies in my youth I'd like to see recreated with modern special effects but without changing other stuff. Then they released The Thing in 2011; I movie that was number one on the list of such films, and I realized how naive I was. Yes, it was a prequel, not a remake, but the point is that - and this is so obvious it will make me a fool to even say it aloud - the special effects were largely secondary to Keith David and Kurt Russell, something no amount of CGI can replace.
