I have the Digital version of Codex: Chaos Space Marines. There the Defiler is listed as having 3 attacks base, and x2 power fists, so 4 attacks total.

I went to buy the model from Game Workshop, and there on the Defiler Page the summary states that the extra attack is already included in the profile. I know the Order page is hardly RAW but it did get me thinking.

Has this been left out of the Digi-Codex? Or is it something left over from the last Codex? Does the Printed version say something similar?

The website lists them as DCCW's too (which would indicate it was written for the previous Codex).
My friend's dead-tree version shows it as 3 attacks base (so 4 until a 'weapon destroyed' result hits one).

Plus if you buy it the Power Scourge, it gets an additional attack.
Same with the swapping of the autocannon for a 3rd Power Fist

For a total of 6 attacks - 7 on the Charge!!

If you haven't check out yet, I'd suggest you to rather buy a Soulgrinder. Defilers got pretty expensive and are squeashy as hell with their AV12, the Soulgrinder is cheaper in points, a lot more durable and fills the same roll if not even more.

I wouldn't call a defiler "squishy". They have 4 HP, It Will Not Die, a 5++, and can't be shaken/stunned...

AV12 means any weapon with S8+ will have a good chance of blowing it up making his 4HP worthless along with the It Will Not Die, or heavy S7 fire volume will as well glancing it to hell and/or score a few lucky penetratings. It is definitively better tougher than a dread but for what it costs it ins't tough enough.

8 shots of autocannon (your avg havoc squad) causes 1.18 hullpoints on the defiler, already considering it's invul, of that 1.18, 0.59 is a penetrating attack. Mathematically with 16 shots of autocannon (again assuming you have the fire volume) means 2.4 hullpoints and one sure penetrating hit which has a 1/6th chance of blowing the defiler up.

Sure this doesn't sound bad but for what you are paying it should be a lot more resilient, for 30 points less you can pay a Soulgrinder which has the same stats except it's AV13 instead of 12. The same 8 Autocannons would do 0.59 hull points, you would need 16 S7 shots for it to take his first glancing. So it is a cheaper model, which is a lot tougher and fills the same roll.

Well, fair enough.

While we're here, what is your opinion on the toughness of other daemon engines, such as the Heldrakes, or Maulerfiends?

Heldrakes fly, so the shooting options on them are limited. Maulerfiends and Forgefiends are squishy, but the Maulerfiend generally charges on Turn 2, while the Forgefiend continues to get shot at. I've played 'em all, that's my experience.

I still <3 the Forgefiend, but recognize it's sub-optimal.

Defilers are straight up terrible. Soulgrinders are straight up amazing. Ally in Daemons if that's what you're after.

They're vulnerable to the 'one-shot-kill', but with 4 HP and "It Will Not Die" is very resistant to being glanced to death.
