How many points do current tournaments run? I know that I am seeing a lot of 2000 point 40k ones but is fantasy 2500 or 3000 at this point?

It will vary wildly depending on where you live but in my area 1850 seems to be standard for 40k (big but not 2000 so no double FOC) and fantasy will usually run at 2400 (nice and big, everyone gets to bring their bells and whistles instead of just the minimum they need to field a viable army but splits into those 25% points blocks much cleaner than 2500).

Oh, I certainly vote with my dollar, but the problem is that that is not enough. The problem with the 'vote with your dollar' response is that it doesn't take into account why we're not buying the product. I want to enjoy 40k enough to buy back in. It was my introduction to traditional games, and there was a time when I enjoyed it very much. I want to buy 40k, but Gamesworkshop is doing their very best to push me away, and simply not buying their product won't tell them that.

40k is usually 1850 around here

Menaphite Dynasty Necrons - 6000
Karak Hirn Dwarfs - 2500

Good to know it's not just my area. Was it bigger before?
I got out during 5th but when I played 2500 was average. 3000 wasn't out of the question for a pick up game and 1500 made you think 'eh, so small, why bother'. It seems that 6th came along, doubled the force org chart and (admittedly from the outside looking in) seemingly killed any interest in big games by throwing balance out the window.

'Standard' 40K tournament size has hovered between 1500 and 1850 since 3rd edition, although for the last couple of editions it has tended more towards the upper end of that . In 2nd ed it was around 2000.

Anything over 2000 points is (and always has been) less common, due to time constraints.

WHFB standard point size is 2400 in Europe.

40k is 1500-1850 with some events at 2000. You used to see events running 2500 thanks to 'Ard Boyz but thankfully that seems to have been dropped by most communities.

Check the 2000pt 40k ones carefully - some places run 1999+1pt tournaments, so that you're still restricted to a single FOC.

Which is bizarre. I don't know why you would do that instead of just running it at 1999, or 1950.

Or, for that matter, just running it at 2000 with a stipulated single FoC...

I'm not sure, either. I would assume it's because they want to avoid some 'Sperglord going "HRR HRR BUT IT SAYS IN THE RULEBOOK 2000PTS GIVES YOU TWO FOC HRRR," but that seems extremely unlikely to occur, and even if it did I would think any decent TO would just tell them to deal with it.

You're going to get that anyway. 1999+1 is 2000. It's a nonsense distinction.

I realize it's a stretch. There's pretty much no good reason to not just say "2000pts, one FOC".

(shrugs) I'm not the one running the tournaments. Some people obviously think it's worth it to prevent arguments but still have the nice round number.

No, the official limit is 1999 pts. Players are given up to 1 point of tolerance.

Then the limit is 2000...
