ok, a little back story, i have a friend that i have gamed with for the last 16 years, from mtg, heroclix, dnd, wow,and other random games. i have also played 40k during this time, but he would never get into, said it was too much.... i know i know.... I've argued and argued its cheaper than magic...

anyways, now i love gaming with this guy, and now im in a position to help him out, im gonna get him an army.

but i need help, we are vastly different gamers. where i want to smash and destroy everything, he's more passive agressive. so i havevno idea what to get him...

in mtg he almost always plays blue,or at least splashes it in.
in wow he was a mage, shaman, or priest.
dnd, always a wizard.

so my natural instict is eldar... but im not sure...

so i need similar minded gamers to help me out, what does he want to play???

and yes, I've asked him, he has no idea what to play.

If you want to go for Eldar for him, wait until their 6th ed Codex drops. Its supposed to be around the back end of this year from what Ive heard.

EDIT: But an Inquisition GK force sounds ok as well.

Tactically, a gunline army might serve him well. Tau or C:SM. DA done without the "wings" might also work.

What I would suggest is sitting down with him and flipping through the section of the rulebook with the blurbs on all the armies and the miniatures gallery and see if anything leaps out at him.

I'd have to say price would come into it a bit.. for that fact... you could go halves into a Chaos/ Dark angel starter pack.. you get cultist/ chosen... he gets a really good starter force of Dark angels.. this is an army that he take in several directions (fast.. termi.. gunline..) and he can also get one of the games prominent psychers to boot.. they have an updated codex, and models for him to go ooo.. ahhh at.. but I may be biased since the friend my mate and I have dragged into 40K has been bribed with DA...

Automatically Appended Next Post:
ps.. this way he would have his own rule book templates etc... and 1000pts force for half the packs cost... that way you meet him half way for an insentive...

Wow you just described me to a t in these games.

I do enjoy playing SM and DA for the tactical flexibility. You can do many different things, have lots of different options, and can basically be the jack of all trades army(of course master of non, but blue players play this game well in MtG).

That being said, if he wants to avoid any of the marine codex, I decided if I ever start a new army, it will be Tau. I decided back in 5th, the new codex coming out, although I haven't had a chance to read it, would just be a bonus.

Of course these are just suggestions. Back when I got my friend into it, I thought nids would be his thing based on how he played other games (and his love of zerg from star craft). Turns out he was more into Necrons, and loved them even before he got his new dex (god I hated those monoliths in 5th, lol).

That being said, if shows any interest, get him to check out the armies. This is where you get a lot of similar feedback whenever someone posts a "help me pick an army" post; things like, get him to read about some of the armies, try and explain them to him, ask him 2000 questions to help him figure it out.
My advice? Take him to your local shop(s), let him watch a few games, or let him play your army against some people willing to help him learn. This is how my buddy chose necrons, after playing several games with my army against people (gives them an idea of how both armies work), and playing with lent armies from friendly people at the shop, he saw someone play necrons. Someone else brought a cron army for him to try, and he fell in love with it!

To each their own, there is my two cents

I'm thinking grey knight paladins. Firstly, it's cheap. Very cheap. Secondly, it's less likely to scare him off, with the small model count he would have to buy. Thirdly, with every grey knight being a psyker, and being able to take very powerfull psykers to compliment, this should appeal to his love of magical powers and such. 4, it's not a "Charge forward and smash up stuff" army. It's a shooting army primarily, but it can handle itself in close combat.

I think this will be the best option for him, but it's a case of seeing if he likes the models

A friend of mine that's pretty much like that plays IG. He really likes the underdogs and the codex gives him so many different options:

- Want a gun-line army? Sure thing.
- Want a massive number of tanks steamrolling through the board? Yes, we can do that.
- Stay back and bomb the frak out of the other player with artillery behind out aegis line? Damn straight!
- Massive amounts of blob army? Why not!
- Close combat for frak and giggles? Yeah, not so good, but we can have some laughs with Ogrys and Rough Riders.

IG can pretty much do anything it wants
