As the thread title says, I've been trying out my new camera. Here's a load of stuff I've been painting over the last few years. Enjoy!

Dakka Jet I did last year:

Grot banna-wavva I picked up on ebay. The banner is sculpted with green stuff:

MegaNobz. Zoom in with the gallery for a better look, since they're a bit fuzzed up here:

Big Mek:

Stormboy nob converted out of a regular nob:

Grumpy nob with a squig:

Waaagh! Banner

Kanz. A grot has had an unfortunate accident in the grotzooka scrap hopper!:

Dread:

Grots. Got 20 more of these done, but those ones could do with rebasing:

Shootas. Currently in the process of bulking this mob out to 30, but here's 15:

Converted big shoota guy:

5 Tallarns I finished up a few days ago:

And finally I couldn't resist a bit of messing about with some scenery...:

C&C very welcome. Ta!

(edit to upload some higher res versions of a few of these- although the forum downscaling seems to fuzz them up a bit unless you zoom in)

I'm digging the skin of your orks, how did you pull it off?

We'll find out soon enough eh.

I'm not usually a fan of "neon" Orks, I prefer a more muted olive tone, but these are wonderful; the skin looks extremely good from a technical perspective, and the bright colour is a nice contrast to the dark & weathered look of the gear. Plus, Goffs are cool

I need to acquire plastic Skavenslaves, can you help?
I have a blog now, evidently. Featuring the Alternative Mordheim Model Megalist.

"The language of modern British politics is meant to sound benign. But words do not mean what they seem to mean. 'Reform' actually means 'cut' or 'end'. 'Flexibility' really means 'exploit'. 'Prudence' really means 'don't invest'. And 'efficient'? That means whatever you want it to mean, usually 'cut'. All really mean 'keep wages low for the masses, taxes low for the rich, profits high for the corporations, and accept the decline in public services and amenities this will cause'." - Robin McAlpine from Common Weal

Thanks everyone!

It's a Panazonic FZ62 bridge camera- our old rubbish camera broke so we thought we'd get something decent for once. Very pleased with it so far! Most of these images are resized to less than 1000 pixels wide- the originals have some crazy detail.

It took me a while to decide on a recipe, but I love it too! Cheers! Then GW only had to go and change the bloomin' paints. Ork muscles are pretty large and smooth, so I had to use a fair few layers:

Basecoat Orkhide shade
Layer snot green
Layer goblin green
Thraka green wash
Layer goblin green. This gets you to the "midtone". Time for highlights:
Highlight scorpion green. Might need a bit of blending to make this smooth, since it's pretty bright!
Highlight mix of 50:50 scorpion green/bleached bone

On the larger characters I use a few more layers- mixes of goblin green/scorpion green, and goblin green/snot green.

I have looooooads of orks painted that only use the first 3 stages here- up to goblin green. It's going to be a big old job to update them!

Man how did you make the ork skin stand out like that?

My random boyz i just do basic colors but i still try to put some detail on the skin since its kinda important. They still look good but nowhere as goodas those.

An ork with an idea tends to end with a bang.

I'm definitely gonna have to give that a try one of these days! Now where did I put those old AoBR Orks?

Great paintjobs and awesome looking pics.

I've been looking to get a decent camera to take modeling pics, so if you don't mind answering a couple questions about the camera?

Looking quickly online it seems that this camera runs about $300-$400 which is awesomely cheap for a DSLR, correct?

Does it have a macro setting, and if so were these pics taken with that setting on, or just using standard settings?

Obviously these pics were taken with a nice light-box, but how does the camera perform in low-light situations, like if you are just taking battle report pics mid-game in real-world standard-light situations?

Thanks so much for sharing!

nice tallarns. Haven't seen them in a while. Good work on the orks too. The orks are 'eavy metal quality work, it seems like.

Thanks, I’m blown away by some of these comments.

Wow, you think? I couldn’t be more flattered!

I totally agree, I’m extremely fond of the Tallarn minis. I’ve got a largish army I had when I was small, and am currently stripping and repainting it. Slowly…!

Looks like I need to take some tabletop pics! I’ll give that a go this weekend and post them up.

The camera isn’t a true DSLR- it’s a “bridge” camera, which is an intermediate camera type- but it does mean that if you want to get any other lenses you’ll have to buy a lens adapter, and you can’t shoot in raw format. They get a lot more pricey than this, so this one seems very good value for money. We picked it because it was one of the “Best Buys” on Which.com, and it was certainly the cheapest with that good a review. I also used a cheapo light tent I got off amazon, and a gorilla pod (hybrid) tripod.

The pictures were taken with Auto-Focus macro mode and some custom settings- there is also a manual focus macro mode, which I haven’t tried. I experimented with the other settings (f-stop, ISO, shutter speed) using advice from http://www.nxtprograms.com/help/photos/stage3.html - the section on “Light Tent Settings for SLR Cameras”. I had no idea what I was doing really but the tweaks suggested there seem to work very well! It’s very easy to change the settings.

It was actually a pretty low light environment- I only had two lights for the tent, and the room was dark. I’ll try and find a third next time and see if that helps make the pictures any better!
